Many apps, websites, phones, and social platforms cannot open layered Photoshop documents, so a finished design is often converted to JPG for sharing, uploading, previewing, or smaller storage. The conversion creates a flattened image and removes Photoshop-specific editing data.

What the PSD format is

PSD is Adobe Photoshop’s native document format. It can store separate layers, masks, editable text, adjustment layers, paths, transparency, color profiles, and high-bit-depth image data, making it suitable for continued editing.

Adobe Photoshop creates PSD files, which are also supported to varying degrees by Photoshop Elements, Affinity Photo, GIMP, and Photopea. Compatibility with Photoshop-specific features such as smart objects, adjustment layers, and effects can vary between applications.

What the JPG format is

JPG, also called JPEG, is a compressed raster image format supported by web browsers, phones, operating systems, office software, and social platforms. Its files are usually much smaller than layered PSD documents, making JPG suitable for photographs, previews, email attachments, web images, and general sharing.

JPG uses lossy compression and stores one rendered image rather than editable document components. Layers, masks, editable text, vector shapes, smart objects, and adjustment controls are not preserved. JPG also has no transparency channel, so transparent areas need a background color.

How to convert a PSD to JPG

Using Adobe Photoshop

Open the PSD with File → Open.
If the document contains transparent areas, add and position a background layer below the artwork. This gives the transparent regions a predictable color instead of leaving their appearance to the conversion software.
Choose File → Save a Copy and select JPEG, or use File → Export → Export As and choose JPG. Exporting renders the visible composite; manually flattening the original document is not required.
Enter a filename such as image.jpg, choose the output folder, and set the JPEG quality. With a 0–100 quality control, approximately 80–90 is a practical starting point for web use and sharing; use a higher setting when preserving fine detail matters more than file size.
Check the output dimensions, color profile, and preview, then save. Keep the PSD if you may need to edit layers or text later.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Layers are lost: a JPG contains a single flattened image. Preserve the original PSD for future editing.
Transparency is lost: transparent pixels must be composited against a color. Use PNG when transparent areas must remain transparent.
Compression reduces detail: repeated JPG saves can produce block artifacts, ringing, and color degradation. Export from the original PSD instead of resaving an already compressed JPG.
Color may change: for typical web and device compatibility, convert the document to sRGB with Edit → Convert to Profile in Photoshop before export. CMYK and wide-gamut files can appear different in applications with limited color-management support. A JPG can contain an embedded color profile, but not every viewer uses it.
Small text and sharp graphics need inspection: JPEG artifacts can blur fine lines, screenshots, logos, diagrams, and high-contrast text. PNG or PDF is generally better for those designs; JPG is usually better suited to photographic content.
