Free online GBR to JPG converter

A program, browser, or document workflow may require a standard raster image instead of a GIMP brush file. Converting .gbr to .jpg creates a shareable preview or flattened image, while the original remains usable as a brush.

What the GBR format is

In the Graphics category, GBR is the native GIMP Brush format used by GIMP. It stores raster brush artwork and brush-specific data such as spacing; depending on the brush, the image can contain grayscale, color, and transparency information.

GBR files are commonly found in GIMP brush folders rather than among ordinary photographs. The format is intended for painting with GIMP, so its brush behavior and metadata are not retained when the artwork is exported to JPG.

What the JPG format is

JPG, also called JPEG, is a widely supported raster image format used by web browsers, image editors, office applications, and operating systems. Its lossy compression produces smaller files than many lossless formats, making JPG suitable for previews, documents, and sharing.

JPG does not support transparency. Transparent areas in a GBR brush must be composited against a solid background before export; otherwise, the conversion tool must choose a background color.

How to convert GBR to JPG

GIMP provides the most reliable manual method because it understands the brush format and lets you check transparency and the resulting canvas.

1. Open GIMP and choose File → Open, then select the .gbr file. If GIMP loads it as an image, inspect its dimensions, color mode, and transparent areas.
2. If direct opening is unavailable, install the brush through Edit → Preferences → Folders → Brushes. Copy the file into one of the listed folders, refresh the Brushes panel, create a new image, and paint one brush mark on the canvas.
3. For transparent artwork, add a background layer below the brush mark and fill it with the required color. JPG cannot preserve the alpha channel.
4. Choose File → Export As, enter a filename ending in .jpg, and select Export.
5. Set JPEG quality to about 90–95 for a clear preview, then confirm the export. Higher quality generally reduces visible artifacts but creates a larger file.

Quality and compatibility limits

The JPG is a flat image, not a reusable GIMP brush. Brush spacing, the brush name, and other GBR-specific behavior are discarded, so retain the original .gbr file if you still need the brush in GIMP.

Inspect edges around transparent artwork after choosing the background, because halos can become visible against a different color. JPG compression can blur fine brush details and introduce artifacts; keep the GBR or export a lossless PNG as the master copy when further editing is expected.
