How to convert crw to jpg file

Websites, phones, and newer photo editors may not open Canon’s older CRW files, while JPG works in most image viewers, browsers, office applications, and print services. Exporting to JPG also reduces file size for sharing, but the original CRW should be retained for future editing.

What the CRW format is

CRW is Canon’s proprietary RAW format, used mainly by older PowerShot and EOS cameras before CR2 became more common. It stores minimally processed data from the camera sensor along with camera metadata, rather than a finished, universally viewable photograph. A RAW developer can therefore adjust exposure, white balance, color rendering, noise reduction, and sharpening before creating an output image.

CRW support varies because Canon used multiple CRW variants and many newer applications have dropped support for older camera models. Older camera cards may also contain THM thumbnail files; these are separate preview files and are normally not required to develop the CRW image.

What the JPG format is

JPG, also called JPEG, is a raster image format supported by browsers, phones, email, social platforms, office software, consumer printers, and most image editors. Its lossy compression produces much smaller files than RAW formats, making JPG suitable for uploads, attachments, everyday viewing, and storage with size restrictions.

Compression discards image data and can create blockiness, ringing, or blurred fine detail at low quality settings. Save photographs at a high quality setting, such as 90–95 on software scales that run from 0 to 100, and avoid repeatedly opening and resaving the same JPG.

How to convert a CRW file to JPG

Using Canon digital photo professional

Canon Digital Photo Professional is a suitable desktop choice when it supports the camera that created the file, because it uses Canon’s RAW profiles.

  1. Open the folder containing the CRW files in Digital Photo Professional.
  2. Select one or more images and apply exposure, white-balance, color, and sharpening adjustments if needed.
  3. Choose File → Convert and save.
  4. Select JPEG, choose an output folder, set a high image-quality value, and confirm the export.

The conversion develops the RAW data into a new JPG; it does not change the original CRW. If the software cannot read the file, install the latest version that supports the camera or use another RAW application.

Using RawTherapee

  1. Install RawTherapee and open the folder containing the CRW files in its file browser.
  2. Open the file in the editor and adjust the image if required. Its RAW edits are non-destructive.
  3. Open the Queue tab or the save/output controls and select JPEG as the format.
  4. Choose a quality around 90–95, set the color space to sRGB for general sharing, select a destination folder, and start processing.

Darktable, compatible versions of Adobe Camera Raw or Lightroom, and some versions of IrfanView can also open CRW files, but support depends on the specific Canon model and application version.

Using the 101convert.com converter

You can convert a CRW file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Upload the file, select JPG as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting image. Do not upload private or sensitive photographs to an online service unless its handling and retention terms are acceptable.

Quality and compatibility limits

Develop the CRW before exporting whenever possible. RAW data generally provides more latitude for correcting exposure and white balance than a previously processed JPG, and a JPG cannot preserve the CRW’s full editing flexibility.

Use sRGB for websites, phones, and general sharing. Wide-gamut profiles can produce unexpected colors in applications that do not manage color correctly. Export at the camera’s full pixel dimensions unless a website or device requires resizing, and keep the CRW as the archival master in a separate folder from the JPG copies.

An unsupported-file error may indicate an obsolete RAW library, an unrecognized CRW variant, or file damage. Update the application, try Canon Digital Photo Professional or another current RAW developer, and confirm that the file has a plausible size. A missing THM file normally does not prevent conversion because it contains only a thumbnail.
