What the CRW format is

CRW is an older Canon Raw image format used by several Canon PowerShot and EOS cameras. It stores minimally processed sensor data rather than a finished, standard RGB image, so exposure, white balance, color, and sharpening can be adjusted during development. CRW files are commonly created by older Canon cameras and encountered in camera archives or folders copied from legacy memory cards; newer Canon cameras generally use CR2 or CR3 instead.

Opening CRW may require software with a LibRaw or dcraw-based decoder, such as darktable, RawTherapee, digiKam, or a current version of GIMP with a compatible raw import plug-in.

What the WEBP format is

WEBP is a raster image format designed for web delivery. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and metadata in many implementations, with lossy files often smaller than JPEG at comparable visual quality. Use WEBP for websites, browser-based applications, messaging, and services that accept WEBP but reject camera raw formats.

How to actually convert CRW to WEBP

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Converting CRW to WEBP renders the raw sensor data into a normal raster image; it does not preserve the same editing flexibility. Keep the original CRW files for archival use, and treat WEBP as a delivery copy.

Choose lossy WEBP quality around 80–90 for general web use, or enable lossless WEBP when exact pixel preservation matters. Lossless output can be substantially larger than lossy output. Very old browsers and image applications may not open WEBP, so JPEG remains a safer fallback when compatibility is more important than size.

Raw-processing software may apply a camera profile and interpret embedded previews differently, so the appearance of the exported WEBP can vary between applications. Check dimensions, orientation, color, and metadata after conversion, especially when the file will be published or printed.
