Many current photo viewers, document systems, and social platforms do not support older Canon CRW files, so conversion is needed for ordinary viewing, sharing, printing, or editing. JPEG also produces a much smaller file, but it does not retain the original raw sensor data.

What the CRW format is

CRW is Canon's older Camera RAW format, used by selected Canon PowerShot and EOS cameras. It stores minimally processed sensor data in Canon's CIFF-based raw structure rather than a finished RGB image. Older cameras may also create a separate .THM thumbnail file.

CRW files are most often found in archives copied from older Canon memory cards. Support varies by application and camera model because the file requires a compatible raw decoder; a program that opens newer Canon .CR2 or .CR3 files may not support every CRW variant.

What the JPEG format is

JPEG is a compressed raster-image format commonly stored with the .jpg or .jpeg extension. Phones, browsers, operating systems, printers, photo editors, and social platforms generally open it without a raw-image plugin.

JPEG uses lossy compression, which makes files substantially smaller for sharing and storage. Compression can discard fine detail and create block artifacts, ringing, or smeared textures, especially at low quality or after repeated saves.

How to convert CRW to JPEG

Quality and compatibility limitations

Raw conversion is not merely a file-extension change. The converter must interpret the sensor data and apply choices for white balance, exposure, demosaicing, color rendering, sharpening, and noise reduction. Automatic conversion may therefore produce a different result from the camera's embedded preview or a carefully adjusted raw edit.

JPEG cannot preserve the CRW file's original sensor data or the same latitude for later exposure and white-balance adjustments. Exported JPEGs may retain ordinary EXIF metadata, but raw-specific information and some camera settings may be omitted.

Use sRGB unless the file will stay in a color-managed workflow. Some software ignores embedded profiles and can display Adobe RGB or wider-gamut JPEGs with inaccurate colors. Export once from the CRW when possible; repeatedly opening and saving a JPEG causes additional lossy compression.
