Some websites, email systems, cameras, and document applications accept JPEG files but reject PNG files. Conversion can also reduce file size for sharing or storage, but JPEG compression is lossy and cannot preserve transparent areas.

What the PNG format is

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a lossless raster format used for screenshots, logos, diagrams, interface graphics, and images with transparent areas. It preserves exact pixel data and supports an alpha channel, but its files are often larger than JPEG photographs. What the JPEG format is

JPEG is a lossy raster format designed mainly for photographs and other continuous-tone images. The .jpg and .jpeg extensions identify the same common JPEG format. Its compression usually produces much smaller files than PNG for photographs, which makes JPEG suitable for websites, email attachments, cameras, social platforms, and photo storage. Standard JPEG files do not support transparency or animation, and saving them repeatedly can add visible compression artifacts.

Keep the PNG as the master file when future editing, exact pixel data, transparency, or further exports may be needed.

Transparent PNG pixels must be composited against a solid background because JPEG has no alpha channel. Choose white, black, or another background color before exporting; otherwise the software may apply a default color or create unexpected edges around partially transparent pixels.

Photographs generally compress well as JPEG, while screenshots, logos, diagrams, line art, and small text often show halos, blur, or color fringing after conversion. JPEG's lossy compression and common chroma subsampling can soften thin lines and small colored text, so PNG is usually the better format when sharp edges, transparency, or lossless storage matters.
