PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a raster image format. It supports lossless compression and transparency, which makes it common for logos, screenshots, icons, web graphics, and images with sharp edges.

Target format: CDR

CDR is the native file format of CorelDRAW. It is typically used for vector artwork, page layouts, text, effects, and embedded bitmap images. A CDR file is best opened and edited in CorelDRAW.

Can a PNG be converted to CDR?

A PNG cannot be turned into a true vector CDR file by a simple rename or export. Because PNG is raster-based and CDR is a CorelDRAW document format, the usual workflow is either to import the PNG into CorelDRAW and save it as CDR, or to trace the PNG into vector objects before saving.

Important: If you only import a PNG and save the file as CDR, the image usually remains a bitmap embedded inside the CorelDRAW document. That is fine for layout work, but it is not the same as editable vector artwork.

Best desktop method: CorelDRAW

1. Open CorelDRAW.
2. Choose File → Import and select your .png file.
3. Place the image on the page.
4. If you need editable vector artwork, select the imported image and use Bitmaps → Outline Trace or PowerTRACE depending on your CorelDRAW version.
5. Adjust settings such as detail, smoothing, and color count to match the image.
6. Review the traced result and edit the vector shapes if needed.
7. Choose File → Save As and save as .cdr.

Note: In older versions of CorelDRAW, tracing was available as Corel PowerTRACE. In newer versions, it is integrated into CorelDRAW.

Alternative desktop workflow: Adobe Illustrator and CorelDRAW

If you do not have CorelDRAW available for tracing, you can vectorize the PNG in another vector editor and then bring the result into CorelDRAW.

1. Open the PNG in Adobe Illustrator.
2. Use Window → Image Trace to convert the bitmap into vector paths.
3. Expand the trace to editable objects.
4. Save as .ai or .eps.
5. Open the file in CorelDRAW and save it as .cdr.

Online converters

Online tools can be convenient for simple files, but they are often limited for PNG to CDR conversion. Many web services only repackage the image or produce a file that still contains the original bitmap rather than a fully editable vector drawing.

If you try an online converter, choose a reputable service that clearly states it supports PNG to CDR or vector tracing, and verify the output in CorelDRAW. For logos, icons, and professional print work, desktop software is usually the safer choice.

Quality and compatibility notes

Tracing works best for logos, icons, simple illustrations, and line art with strong contrast. Photos, soft shadows, and complex gradients usually do not trace cleanly and are better kept as embedded bitmaps.

CDR compatibility varies by CorelDRAW version. Newer CDR files may not open correctly in older versions of CorelDRAW or in third-party software. If you need broader compatibility, consider also saving a copy as .pdf or .eps.

Best practice: Use CorelDRAW when you need a genuine editable CDR file. Use tracing only when the PNG is suitable for vector conversion. If you only need to place the image in a CorelDRAW layout, importing the PNG and saving the document as CDR is enough.
