How to convert png to pat file

A graphics editor or digital-painting application may require a PAT pattern resource rather than the original PNG. Converting the image lets you reuse it as a tiled fill, texture, or brush pattern in software such as GIMP or Photoshop.

What the PNG format is

PNG is a raster format that stores pixels with lossless compression and optional transparency. It is commonly used for web graphics, interface assets, screenshots, logos, and images with sharp edges or an alpha channel. GIMP, Adobe Photoshop, Krita, Affinity Photo, browsers, and operating-system screenshot tools can create or open PNG files.

A PNG is an ordinary image, not a pattern-library resource. Its dimensions, color data, transparency, and edge treatment remain part of the source image until a graphics application exports or registers it as a pattern.

What the PAT format is

PAT usually identifies a bitmap pattern resource used by GIMP or Adobe Photoshop. The resource contains an image intended to repeat across a larger area, allowing an application to fill selections, layers, backgrounds, or surfaces with the tile.

PAT patterns are useful for fabric, paper, stone, and other textures, tiled backgrounds, game assets, and repetitive decorative elements. Unlike a PNG, a PAT file is normally loaded into an application’s pattern library and selected as a fill resource.

PAT is not one universal format. GIMP PAT files and Photoshop PAT files use different internal conventions despite sharing the extension. Export the file for the application that will open it; changing .png to .pat only changes the filename and does not convert the data.

How to create a PAT file in GIMP

  1. Open the PNG with File → Open.
  2. Crop or resize it to the intended tile. A square canvas is convenient for general-purpose patterns, but it is not required; preserve the original aspect ratio when the design depends on it.
  3. Check the image mode, dimensions, and transparency. Keep the alpha channel when the destination supports transparent pattern areas, and flatten or remove transparency only when required by that destination.
  4. Choose File → Export As, enter a name such as texture.pat, and confirm the PAT export format.
  5. Enter the pattern description when GIMP requests it, then choose Export.
  6. To use the file in GIMP, copy it to a folder listed under Edit → Preferences → Folders → Patterns. Refresh the Patterns dock or restart GIMP, then select the new pattern.

GIMP is the practical free desktop choice when the destination is GIMP or software that accepts the GIMP PAT dialect.

How to create a Photoshop pattern

  1. Open the PNG in Photoshop with File → Open, then crop, resize, and correct its transparency or color mode as needed.
  2. Choose Edit → Define Pattern, assign a name, and confirm. Photoshop adds the image to its current pattern presets.
  3. To create a transferable Photoshop PAT file, open the Patterns panel and use its panel menu’s Export Selected Patterns command when available. In older Photoshop releases, use Edit → Presets → Preset Manager, select Patterns, select the pattern, and choose Save Set. The resulting pattern set uses the .pat extension.

Defining a pattern registers it inside Photoshop but does not necessarily create a standalone file until the pattern or pattern set is exported.

Online conversion options

Services such as Convertio and CloudConvert can be considered for non-sensitive PNGs, but their current format lists and PAT dialect support vary. Use one only when its output setting explicitly identifies the required GIMP or Photoshop PAT format; a generic PAT result may not open in the intended application. Uploading artwork to an online service also exposes it to third-party processing, so local GIMP or Photoshop conversion is preferable for private files.

Quality and compatibility limits

A PAT resource normally repeats the source pixels without increasing their resolution. A low-resolution PNG remains pixelated at large scale, and compression artifacts repeat across the entire surface. Keep the original PNG as the editable master because PAT files may omit metadata, layers, or PNG-specific information.

Inspect the tile edges before export. Different colors or misaligned features at the left and right edges, or at the top and bottom edges, create visible seams. In GIMP, Filters → Map → Tile Seamless can reduce seams, but it may change fine details and should be checked at the intended scale.

Confirm the target application’s PAT dialect and any limits on color mode, transparency, or tile dimensions. A GIMP PAT file may not load directly in Photoshop, and a Photoshop PAT set may not load directly in GIMP; exporting the same prepared PNG separately for each application is often the safest approach.

Frequently asked questions

Will my PNG transparency be preserved when converting it to PAT?

Transparency can be preserved if the PAT variant and the software reading it support an alpha channel. If the image is flattened against a background first, the transparent areas cannot be recovered.

Does converting PNG to PAT make the pattern seamless?

No, converting the file does not remove seams or make its edges match. The PNG must already be designed as a seamless tile, or the join between its opposite edges may be visible when repeated.

Will PNG to PAT reduce image quality or resolution?

The PAT remains a raster pattern with the PNG's pixel dimensions, so it cannot add detail that was not in the source. Keep the original resolution and avoid unnecessary resizing or lossy processing before conversion.

Why will my PAT file not open after converting from PNG?

PAT is used by more than one pattern format, and the resulting file may not match the reader's expected variant, colour mode, or format version. Using the correct PAT variant and a supported raster mode usually avoids this compatibility problem.
