Convert PNG to TNS

TI-Nspire calculators cannot normally open a PNG as an ordinary image file; they need the picture packaged in a .tns document. This is required when a diagram, screenshot, graph background, or worksheet image must be sent to a TI-Nspire handheld.

PNG and TNS formats

PNG is a lossless raster-image format used by screenshot tools, web browsers, image editors, scientific software, and office applications. It supports RGB color, grayscale, indexed color, and transparency, making it suitable for charts, diagrams, equations, and text-heavy screenshots.

.tns is the document format for TI-Nspire software and handhelds. A TNS document can contain Calculator, Graphs, Geometry, Notes, Lists & Spreadsheet, and other TI-Nspire pages. For this conversion, the PNG is embedded or converted into a calculator-readable document; TNS is not a general-purpose replacement bitmap format.

The main benefit of TNS is that the image can be stored, opened, and shared through TI-Nspire document tools and transferred to a compatible handheld.

Convert a PNG with TI-Nspire CX II Connect

For a TI-Nspire CX II or CX II CAS handheld, use Texas Instruments' official browser-based TI-Nspire CX II Connect application. Its Image Converter is designed to create TI-Nspire image documents from common picture files, including PNG; general online converters rarely support TNS correctly.

1. Crop the PNG to the required diagram or figure. Remove unused borders and enlarge small labels before conversion.
2. Connect the calculator to the computer with USB and open TI-Nspire CX II Connect in a supported desktop browser.
3. Open the Image Converter tool, select or drag in the PNG, and create the TNS output.
4. Save the generated .tns file or send it to the connected handheld from the Connect interface.
5. On the calculator, open the file from My Documents and verify that text, axes, and lines remain readable.

Use the official TI tool rather than an unrelated file-conversion website. TNS is a TI-Nspire document format, and a generic converter cannot reliably produce a usable calculator document.

Create a document with desktop TI-Nspire software

TI-Nspire CX Student Software or Teacher Software is preferable when the image must appear with notes, calculations, or multiple pages. Create a new document, add a Notes or other suitable page, use Insert → Image to place the PNG, then save the document as filename.tns. Transfer the saved file through the software's Documents workspace or a compatible TI transfer utility.

Insert the image on a Notes page when it needs labels or explanatory text. Use a Graphs page only when the image is specifically needed as a graph background or reference figure.

Image quality and compatibility

TI-Nspire CX and CX II handhelds use a 320 × 240 pixel display. Large desktop screenshots will be scaled down, so thin lines, dense tables, and small type can become unreadable. A cropped image near the display's 4:3 proportions usually works better than a full-resolution screenshot.

PNG's lossless compression preserves line art and text better than JPEG, but transparency may not render exactly as expected in a calculator document. Flatten transparent artwork onto a solid background when the background is visually significant.

Test the TNS file on the intended handheld and operating-system version before distribution. Document support can differ between CX, CX II, older TI-Nspire models, and restricted exam configurations; a file created for a newer device may not be suitable for every earlier model.
