Free online PNG to SVG converter

Cutting machines, web interfaces, and scalable print workflows may require an SVG instead of a PNG. Converting is useful when you need editable paths or resolution-independent artwork, but tracing cannot recover vector detail that was never present in the raster source.

What PNG is

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a raster format that stores an image as a grid of pixels. It uses lossless compression and supports transparency through an alpha channel, making it common for screenshots, interface graphics, diagrams, icons, transparent logos, and web images.

Web browsers and graphics editors such as GIMP, Adobe Photoshop, Affinity Photo, Krita, and Inkscape can open or create .png files. PNG is suitable for photographs and detailed artwork, but its pixel dimensions limit how far it can be enlarged before edges become blurred or blocky.

What SVG is

SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) is an XML-based format that describes shapes, paths, fills, strokes, and text with geometric data rather than a fixed pixel grid. Browsers, illustration applications, page-layout software, and many vinyl, laser, and craft cutting systems support .svg files.

SVG artwork can be enlarged or reduced without pixelation. Its paths and colors can be edited individually, and files are often smaller than raster images when they contain simple logos, icons, diagrams, flat illustrations, or line art. Photographs, complex textures, and heavily shaded artwork generally remain better suited to PNG or another raster format.

How to convert PNG to SVG

A genuine conversion normally means vectorization: software analyzes the pixels and creates vector paths that approximate them. A file renamed with an .svg extension is not converted, and an SVG that only embeds the original PNG does not provide editable vector artwork.

Using the built-in online converter

1. Open the PNG-to-SVG converter on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the .png file and choose SVG as the output format if a format selector is shown.
3. Start the conversion and download the resulting .svg file. The conversion can be performed for free without installing software.
4. Open the result in a browser or vector editor. Check the edges, colors, transparency, dimensions, and whether the result contains selectable paths rather than only an embedded bitmap.

Automatic conversion is most reliable for clean, high-contrast graphics with distinct colors. Its result may contain an embedded raster image, vector paths, or both, so it should be inspected before use in a cutting or production workflow.

Using Inkscape for editable paths

1. Install Inkscape on Windows, macOS, or Linux and choose File → Import to place the PNG in a document.
2. Select the imported image and choose Path → Trace Bitmap.
3. For monochrome artwork, use Single scan → Brightness cutoff and adjust the threshold until the preview matches the source. For flat-color artwork, use Multiple scans → Colors and set the scan count close to the number of intended colors.
4. Click Apply. Inkscape places the traced vector over the original bitmap. Move the top object aside to inspect it, then delete the PNG if the SVG must contain vector artwork only.
5. Clean up unwanted paths and simplify excessively complex shapes if necessary.
6. Choose File → Save As, select Plain SVG for broad compatibility or Inkscape SVG to retain Inkscape-specific data, and save the file as image.svg.

For simple black-and-white images, Potrace can generate SVG paths, but PNG input must first be converted to a suitable bitmap format such as PBM. Inkscape is more practical for colored artwork and manual cleanup.

Quality and compatibility limits

Tracing approximates pixel boundaries with paths. Anti-aliased edges, compression artifacts, shadows, gradients, transparency, and photographic detail can create inaccurate shapes, excessive nodes, or very large SVG files. A clean source with high resolution and a plain background produces better results than a small, noisy PNG.

Remove unwanted background pixels before tracing, or use transparency when the conversion settings support it. Limit the number of traced colors and simplify paths when the result is slow to edit or unusually large. If the original logo or illustration exists as an SVG, PDF, EPS, or another vector source, use that file instead of tracing the PNG.

Cutting and production applications may require closed paths, converted text, specific stroke colors, or no embedded bitmap. Fonts can substitute when SVG text is opened on another system, so convert text to paths when consistent lettering is required. Filters, blend modes, masks, and editor-specific effects may render differently because applications support different subsets of SVG; Plain SVG or an SVG 1.1-compatible export is generally safer for cross-application use.
