Free online SWF to SVG converter

Legacy Flash graphics may need to be placed in a browser, documentation system, design editor, or cutting workflow that accepts SVG but cannot use SWF. Converting a static vector frame can also preserve artwork from Flash-era archives after browser Flash support ended.

What SWF contains

SWF is a compiled Adobe Flash movie format, historically created with Flash Professional, Adobe Animate, Flex tools, and other Flash authoring software. Publishers used it for web animations, advertisements, e-learning modules, games, presentations, and interactive kiosks.

An SWF can contain vector shapes, text, bitmap images, audio, video, timeline animation, nested movie clips, filters, fonts, and ActionScript code. Some files contain only a logo or illustration, while others are complete applications; the .swf extension does not identify which content can be converted.

Flash Player reached end of life in 2020, and current mainstream browsers do not run SWF content. SWF files therefore commonly appear in old website backups, legacy courseware, archived games, and historical design assets.

What SVG provides

SVG is an XML-based format for two-dimensional vector graphics. It can describe paths, shapes, text, gradients, clipping paths, and embedded raster images, and is supported by current browsers and vector editors such as Inkscape and Adobe Illustrator.

SVG is suitable for static logos, icons, diagrams, and illustration frames because vector paths scale without pixelation and remain editable. An SVG can also be styled with CSS or accessed through the browser DOM, although those capabilities do not reproduce a Flash runtime.

SVG supports some animation and scripting, but it has no direct equivalent for Flash timelines, ActionScript, controls, game logic, or many Flash-specific filters. Treat the conversion as an extraction of visible artwork, not as a migration of an interactive SWF application.

Convert a file online

1. Upload the .swf file to the SWF-to-SVG converter on 101convert.com.
2. Select SVG as the output format and start the conversion.
3. Download the SVG and open it in a current browser or vector editor for inspection.
4. Compare it with the intended SWF frame, then correct paths, text, masks, or effects before publishing it.

This method is most appropriate for SWF files containing static vector artwork or a simple visible frame. Keep the original SWF because conversion may discard content that SVG cannot represent.

Desktop options for difficult files

Inkscape does not natively import SWF files, so it cannot perform the direct import-and-save workflow sometimes suggested for this conversion. It is useful after conversion for inspecting and editing the resulting SVG.

For local command-line processing, the older SWFTools package includes swf2svg. Where it is available, run:

swf2svg input.swf -o output.svg

SWFTools is legacy software and may not handle newer Flash features or be available in current package repositories. Test its output carefully, especially with compressed, scripted, or animation-heavy movies.

For an SWF with multiple symbols, frames, or embedded assets, inspect it in JPEXS Free Flash Decompiler (FFDec). Export selected vector shapes or frames as SVG when supported rather than converting the entire movie; individual asset exports are often smaller and easier to edit. If the original .fla project is available, use it instead of the published SWF because it retains layers, library assets, symbols, and authoring structure. Adobe Animate versions that provide SVG export can export the required artwork from the source project, after which the SVG can be cleaned up in Inkscape.

Quality and compatibility limits

Only native SWF vector shapes map naturally to SVG paths. Embedded JPEG, PNG, and video content remains raster data, may be embedded as an image, or may be skipped by a particular converter; conversion cannot create vector detail from pixels.

Text can become paths when the original font is not embedded or cannot be mapped to an installed font. Outlined text preserves its appearance but is no longer editable as characters. Retain the source font and source project when editable text matters.

ActionScript, buttons, form controls, sound, video playback, and timeline behavior do not become functional SVG equivalents. Export representative frames or reusable assets, then rebuild required interaction with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and separate media files.

Flash and SVG use different compositing models, so masks, blend modes, gradients, filters, morph shapes, and nested movie clips can render differently. Check the SVG at its final display size, simplify unsupported effects, and remove unnecessary hidden objects or excess path points before deployment.

Review converted SVG files before placing them on a website, particularly when they came from an untrusted source. SVG can contain scripts, external references, and links; remove content that is not required for the graphic.
