A web page, cutting machine, diagram editor, or scalable graphics workflow may require SVG when the source artwork is supplied as a PDF. Converting a vector-based page preserves paths for editing and scaling, while scanned pages remain raster images inside the resulting SVG.

What the PDF format is

PDF (Portable Document Format) stores page content through text, vector paths, images, fonts, colors, and layout instructions. Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Office, LibreOffice, browsers, scanners, and graphics applications create PDFs for print-ready artwork, invoices, forms, manuals, exported documents, and records. Its fixed-page layout usually looks consistent across operating systems and printers.

What the SVG format is

SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) is an XML-based format for two-dimensional graphics. Browsers, Inkscape, Adobe Illustrator, Figma, diagramming applications, laser cutters, and plotters can open it. Shapes, paths, and some text remain editable, and vector content scales without the pixelation produced by enlarging a bitmap. SVG can also be embedded in HTML and styled with CSS.

This option requires no installed software and is suitable for non-confidential files. Do not upload personal records, unreleased artwork, or documents covered by a confidentiality agreement unless the service's handling and retention terms meet your requirements.

Using Inkscape

1. Open Inkscape and choose File → Open, then select the PDF.
2. In the PDF import dialog, select the required page. If the dialog offers both Poppler/Cairo and Internal import, test the importer that best preserves the artwork.
3. Inspect the page for missing fonts, changed text spacing, clipped effects, misplaced images, and altered transparency.
4. Choose File → Save As, select SVG or Plain SVG, and save the file. Plain SVG removes Inkscape-specific data and is generally more compatible with other applications.

Inkscape normally imports one PDF page at a time. Save each required page as a separate SVG because SVG has no standard multi-page document model.

Using Poppler

Poppler's pdftocairo utility can convert a single PDF page without a graphical editor:

Install Poppler through your operating system's package manager, then use a page-selection option such as -f 2 -l 2 when processing page 2. Process each page separately for a multi-page document and give each output a different filename. Check the installed version's help output with pdftocairo -h, because available options vary by package version.

Quality and compatibility limits

• A PDF created from vector artwork can produce SVG paths, but conversion may change groups, clipping paths, gradients, transparency, blend modes, filters, line joins, and pattern fills. Compare the result with the original before production use.
• Text may remain text with a font reference, become outlined paths, or be replaced imperfectly if the required font is unavailable. Outlining preserves appearance more reliably but prevents normal text editing and can increase file size.
• A scanned or image-only PDF contains pixels, not vector shapes. Conversion embeds the raster image in the SVG; it does not create clean scalable outlines. Use tracing only when approximate geometry is acceptable.
• PDF commonly measures pages in points, while SVG uses a coordinate system defined by its viewBox, width, height, and CSS unit rules. Verify dimensions, aspect ratio, and millimetre or inch settings before sending the output to a cutter, plotter, or printer.
• Embedded raster images make the SVG scalable as a container, not as image content; the embedded bitmap still has its original resolution. External image links can break when the file is moved, so use embedded images when the receiving workflow requires a self-contained file.
• Some applications ignore SVG masks, CSS, filters, embedded fonts, or advanced effects. Open the result in the target application and, when necessary, simplify effects, embed images, and outline text.
• SVG is XML and can contain metadata or active elements. Sanitize files from untrusted sources before inserting them into a web page, and remove unnecessary metadata when privacy matters.
