Free online PDF to TIF converter

A scanner archive, document-management system, or imaging program may require TIFF instead of PDF. Converting a PDF into page images also provides a fixed raster layout for OCR, printing, or page-level image processing.

What the PDF format is

PDF, or Portable Document Format, stores text, vector graphics, raster images, fonts, annotations, form fields, and page layout in a document intended to display consistently across operating systems. Adobe Acrobat, web browsers, office suites, scanners, print drivers, and desktop-publishing applications create PDF files. Common examples include invoices, contracts, manuals, scanned records, and documents downloaded from websites.

What the TIF format is

TIF and TIFF are extensions for the same tagged raster-image format. TIFF supports high bit depths, color profiles, metadata, and lossless compression such as LZW and ZIP. Scanners, OCR systems, printers, publishing applications, and image archives use it when a receiving system accepts image files rather than PDFs or when each page must be processed as pixels.

A multipage PDF normally becomes a sequence of single-page TIFF files or one multipage TIFF. Confirm which structure the target application accepts: some systems support only single-page, grayscale, black-and-white, uncompressed, or specifically named TIFF variants.

Choose the conversion type

Rendering creates a TIFF image of every PDF page and is the appropriate choice when the complete visible page must be preserved. It converts text, vectors, images, forms, and annotations into pixels.

Extracting embedded images is different. A PDF may contain one or more original TIFF or other raster images, but extracting them does not reproduce the page layout and may omit text, vector artwork, and annotations. Poppler's pdfimages utility can extract embedded images with pdfimages -tiff input.pdf image; use page rendering when the goal is a TIFF copy of each complete page.

How to convert PDF to TIF

Using 101convert:

1. Open the PDF-to-TIF converter on 101convert.com. It is free and requires no software installation.
2. Upload the PDF and choose TIFF or TIF as the output format.
3. If available, set the resolution and color mode. Use 300 dpi for most document pages, 400–600 dpi for very small text or demanding OCR, and grayscale or one-bit black-and-white when color is unnecessary.
4. Start the conversion and download the resulting TIFF file or files.

Do not upload confidential documents to an online service unless its handling and retention policies meet your requirements; use a local converter for sensitive records.

Using Poppler locally: Install the Poppler utilities, open a terminal in the PDF's folder, and run pdftoppm -tiff -r 300 input.pdf page. This renders one TIFF per page, such as page-1.tif and page-2.tif. Add -gray for grayscale or -mono for one-bit black-and-white output. Increase -r 300 to -r 400 or -r 600 when the source contains small text that requires more pixels.

To combine rendered pages into one multipage TIFF with ImageMagick, run magick page-*.tif multipage.tif. The shell expands the filename pattern before ImageMagick runs, and the files must be in the required page order. ImageMagick may require Ghostscript for direct PDF reading and may restrict PDF input through its security policy, but it can combine TIFF pages without opening the PDF.

Quality and compatibility limits

Rendering removes the PDF's independently editable text, hyperlinks, vector objects, form fields, and annotations; the output contains pixels. TIFF files can be substantially larger than PDFs, especially at 600 dpi or in full color. An A4 or Letter page at 300 dpi is approximately 2,500 × 3,300 pixels before storage overhead.

Use LZW or ZIP compression for archival and OCR work. Avoid JPEG-compressed TIFF when fine text or line art must remain clean, because lossy compression can introduce artifacts. Check page order, orientation, cropping, resolution, color mode, and compression after conversion. A viewer or receiving system may reject multipage TIFF, high-bit-depth color, alpha channels, or compression types it does not support.
