Free online RW2 to TIF converter

Panasonic cameras save photographs as RW2 raw files, while some print, publishing, archiving, and editing applications require TIFF/TIF. Converting creates a rendered image that can be opened without software capable of developing Panasonic raw data.

What the RW2 format is

RW2 is Panasonic’s raw still-image format, used mainly by Lumix cameras and some Leica models based on Panasonic systems. It stores minimally processed sensor data with camera metadata such as exposure, lens, and white-balance information. Raw-processing software is required to interpret the sensor data as a viewable image.

Applications such as Adobe Lightroom and Camera Raw, darktable, RawTherapee, Capture One, Affinity Photo, and Panasonic imaging software can open RW2 files. A file browser may display a thumbnail, but that does not mean every application can fully open, print, or edit the image.

What the TIF format is

TIF and TIFF are filename extensions for the same Tagged Image File Format. TIFF stores rendered raster pixels, metadata, and, depending on the software, channels, layers, and transparency.

TIFF is used for printing, scanning, publishing, scientific imaging, and archival workflows because it supports 16-bit-per-channel color, embedded ICC profiles, and lossless compression such as LZW or ZIP. TIFF files are usually much larger than JPEG files, but lossless TIFF compression does not discard pixel data.

Convert RW2 to TIF without installing software

Convert with desktop software

Desktop raw processors provide control over the rendering and are preferable when the image needs exposure, color, or detail adjustments before export.

• darktable: Open the RW2 in the lighttable, edit it in the darkroom, select the image, and open Export. Set File format to TIFF, choose 16-bit output when available, select LZW or ZIP compression, choose an output folder, and click Export.
• RawTherapee: Open the RW2, adjust its processing profile, then use the save controls or processing queue. Select TIFF, set 16-bit integer output, choose an appropriate ICC profile such as sRGB or Adobe RGB, select lossless compression, and save or process the file.
• Adobe Lightroom: Import and develop the RW2, then use File → Export. Select TIFF, choose 8-bit or 16-bit depth, set the color space and compression, and export.
• Adobe Photoshop: Open the RW2 through its Camera Raw processor, apply adjustments, then use File → Save As or File → Save a Copy and choose TIFF. Select 8-bit or 16-bit output and an appropriate compression option.

Quality and compatibility limits

RW2-to-TIFF conversion is a raw development step, not a simple container change. The TIFF contains rendered pixels and selected metadata; it does not retain the original sensor data or the RW2’s full editing flexibility. Keep the original RW2 files if later exposure, white-balance, highlight-recovery, or rendering changes may be needed.

Use a 16-bit TIFF for further editing, compositing, or high-quality printing. An 8-bit export has less tonal precision and can show banding after substantial adjustments. LZW and ZIP are lossless compression methods, so they reduce file size without changing pixel values.

Choose sRGB for ordinary sharing and applications with limited color-management support. Use Adobe RGB or another wide-gamut profile only when the rest of the workflow, display, and printer support it. Some older programs accept TIFF but have problems with 16-bit data, very large dimensions, embedded profiles, layers, or unusual channel configurations; an 8-bit sRGB TIFF is the safer compatibility export in those cases.
