How to convert png to tif file

Some scanners, publishing systems, medical-imaging applications, and print workflows require TIFF instead of PNG. Converting the file provides the required .tif or .tiff container without changing its pixel dimensions.

What the PNG format is

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a raster image format created by web browsers, screenshot tools, drawing applications, scanners, and editors such as GIMP, Photoshop, and Affinity Photo. It uses lossless compression, supports RGB and grayscale images, and can preserve an alpha channel for transparent areas.

PNG is widely used for web graphics, interface assets, screenshots, and digital artwork. Some print, scanning, publishing, and archival systems do not accept it even though its image data is lossless.

What the TIF format is

TIF and TIFF are filename extensions for the same Tagged Image File Format. TIFF is used for scanning, desktop publishing, geographic and scientific imaging, high-resolution print production, and document archiving.

TIFF can store high-resolution raster data, metadata, multiple pages, RGB, grayscale, CMYK, and some higher bit depths. Its available features depend on the software reading the file. Lossless compression options include LZW, Deflate, and PackBits; uncompressed TIFF is also supported. TIFF is often more suitable than PNG for print and archival workflows, but files can be larger and advanced features are not equally compatible across applications.

Convert the file online

You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software. Upload the PNG, select TIF or TIFF as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. This type of conversion normally retains the source width and height.

Convert with desktop software

GIMP

  1. Open the PNG with File → Open.
  2. Select File → Export As.
  3. Set the output filename to end in .tif or .tiff, then select Export.
  4. Choose LZW or Deflate in the TIFF export dialog and confirm with Export.

GIMP is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It can export individual files, but dedicated batch tools are more convenient for large sets.

ImageMagick

With ImageMagick installed, run the following command in a terminal or command prompt:

magick input.png -compress LZW output.tif

LZW is lossless. Deflate is another lossless option:

magick input.png -compress Zip output.tif

To convert every PNG in a directory into a separate folder, create converted first and run:

magick mogrify -format tif -path converted -compress LZW *.png

ImageMagick retains the source pixel dimensions unless a resize or resampling option is added. Photoshop and other image editors provide equivalent TIFF export controls through their save or export commands, including compression, color mode, and bit-depth settings.

Quality and compatibility limits

PNG compression is already lossless, so conversion cannot restore missing detail, increase resolution, or create pixels that were not present in the source. A TIFF exported with LZW, Deflate, PackBits, or no compression preserves the PNG’s pixel values, subject to color conversion and the export settings. Avoid JPEG compression inside TIFF when exact image data matters.

Transparency requires checking the destination application. TIFF can store transparency information, but some older print and publishing programs ignore alpha channels. If the receiving system requires an opaque image, flatten the PNG against the intended background before exporting.

Check the image mode and bit depth before conversion. A normal PNG export commonly produces an RGB or grayscale TIFF, while a print workflow may require CMYK. Converting RGB to CMYK changes color values and should use the profile supplied by the printer or publisher.

Changing resolution metadata from 96 DPI to 300 DPI does not add detail or change the pixel count. Resample only when the receiving workflow requires different pixel dimensions. A simple PNG-to-TIFF export also creates a single-page TIFF; it does not automatically create multiple pages or editable layers.
