Document-management systems, image editors, and upload portals may accept TIFF files but reject EPS artwork. Converting renders the EPS at a fixed pixel size, so the selected dimensions, resolution, and color mode determine the final image.

What EPS files contain

EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) is a PostScript-based graphics format used in commercial printing, publishing, logo libraries, and legacy design workflows. An EPS can contain vector paths, text, raster images, and PostScript drawing instructions; many files also include a preview for software that cannot render PostScript.

Vector-based EPS artwork has no fixed pixel dimensions. Its bounding box defines the artwork area, and a converter rasterizes that area at the requested resolution. EPS remains useful as an editable or scalable source, but support is limited in many current consumer and office applications.

What TIFF files provide

TIFF (Tagged Image File Format), commonly stored with .tif or .tiff extensions, is a raster image format used for scans, prepress assets, archival images, and high-resolution publishing files. TIFF supports bilevel, grayscale, RGB, and CMYK pixel data, as well as lossless LZW or ZIP compression.

TIFF is appropriate when the recipient needs a fixed bitmap rather than PostScript artwork. It can preserve image pixels without JPEG-style lossy compression, but files can be large: an 8 × 10 inch RGB image at 300 DPI contains 2400 × 3000 pixels before compression.

Convert an EPS file to TIFF

To convert without installing software, upload the EPS file to 101convert.com, select TIFF as the output format, convert it, and download the result. Set the output resolution according to the final physical size: 300 DPI at final print size is a standard setting for photographs and ordinary print graphics; use 600 DPI or more for fine line art, small text, technical drawings, or barcodes.

Adobe Illustrator gives direct control over the rasterization. Open the EPS, verify that its fonts and linked images render correctly, then select File → Export → Export As and choose TIFF. Enable Use Artboards only when the intended output should match the artboard rather than the EPS artwork bounds. In the TIFF options, set resolution, color model, anti-aliasing, and LZW compression.

Use RGB TIFF for screen, office, and most general-purpose workflows. Use CMYK only when a print provider or prepress workflow specifically requests CMYK TIFF, preferably with its required ICC profile. Preserve transparency only if the receiving software explicitly supports alpha-channel TIFF files.

Adobe Photoshop can also rasterize EPS files. Choose File → Open, select the EPS, and set the rasterization dimensions, resolution, and color mode in the import dialog. Then use File → Save a Copy, select TIFF, and choose LZW or ZIP compression. Photoshop rasterizes the file on opening, so changing the TIFF resolution later does not create additional detail.

For command-line or batch processing, Ghostscript can render EPS directly. This command creates an RGB TIFF at 300 DPI with LZW compression:

For one-bit black line art, Group 4 compression produces compact TIFF files when the artwork contains no color or gray tones:

Quality and compatibility limits

Rasterization permanently removes editable paths, live text, and resolution independence. Do not enlarge a completed TIFF to improve quality; render the original EPS again at the needed pixel dimensions and DPI.

EPS files can depend on installed fonts, linked images, and PostScript features. Missing fonts may be substituted during rendering and can change text width, line breaks, or glyph shapes. Check the rendered TIFF at 100% view, especially around text, clipping paths, overprints, and thin rules.

Some recipients support only basic TIFF variants. For maximum compatibility, send a single-page, flattened RGB or grayscale TIFF with LZW compression; avoid layers, alpha channels, multipage TIFFs, and uncommon compression unless requested. Keep the original EPS because it is the scalable source file.
