Browsers, office applications, print services, and document-management systems commonly accept PDF but not EPS, so converting the artwork makes it easier to share, review, print, and archive. The conversion normally preserves vector paths, but its result still depends on fonts, embedded images, color settings, and the EPS bounding box.

What the EPS format is

EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) is a PostScript-based format designed to place an illustration inside another document. It usually stores logos, icons, diagrams, and print artwork as vector paths, but it can also contain embedded raster images, clipping paths, spot colors, and PostScript instructions. EPS files are normally single-page artwork rather than general-purpose documents.

Print designers, prepress operators, desktop-publishing applications, and older graphics workflows use EPS. Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW, Affinity Designer, Inkscape, and other graphics applications can create or open it. Support is inconsistent in modern browsers, office software, and document viewers, which makes EPS inconvenient for routine distribution.

What the PDF format is

PDF packages page geometry, text, vector artwork, raster images, fonts, color information, and metadata in a document intended to render consistently across operating systems and applications. Browsers and common PDF viewers can open it without the software that created the original artwork.

When the source contains vector artwork, a normal PDF conversion generally keeps that artwork as vectors, so logos and line art remain sharp at different sizes. PDF is suitable for email, upload, proofing, printing, and archiving, and can preserve selectable text, embedded fonts, color profiles, permissions, and print-production standards such as PDF/X. These features depend on the export settings and the source file.

How to convert an EPS file

Using 101convert:

1. Open the EPS-to-PDF converter on 101convert.com.
2. Select or upload the .eps file.
3. Choose PDF as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the .pdf file, then check its page size, artwork bounds, text, fonts, images, and colors.

This option requires no installed software and is suitable for ordinary, non-sensitive artwork. Do not upload confidential or restricted files unless the service’s handling and retention terms meet your requirements.

Using Inkscape:

1. Install Ghostscript if Inkscape cannot import EPS on your system, then open the file in Inkscape.
2. Inspect the page boundary, artwork position, linked or embedded images, and fonts. Correct the canvas or artwork placement if necessary.
3. Choose File → Save a Copy, select PDF, and save the file.
4. Set the required page size and export area in the PDF options, retaining vector output where the available options allow it.

Inkscape is useful when the artwork needs repositioning, cropping, or inspection before export.

Using Adobe Illustrator:

1. Open the EPS and check linked images, fonts, transparency, overprinting, and document color settings.
2. Choose File → Save As or File → Save a Copy, then select Adobe PDF.
3. Choose an appropriate preset, such as High Quality Print, or use the PDF/X preset supplied by the printer.
4. Set bleed, crop marks, color conversion, image compression, and font options according to the printer’s specification rather than enabling them by default.

Using Ghostscript: Ghostscript can convert files repeatedly or in batches through its PostScript interpreter:

gs -dBATCH -dNOPAUSE -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -sOutputFile=output.pdf input.eps

On Windows, use gswin64c instead of gs when that is the installed executable. Add -dEPSCrop when the desired PDF page should follow the EPS bounding box:

gs -dBATCH -dNOPAUSE -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -dEPSCrop -sOutputFile=output.pdf input.eps

Generic Ghostscript output is not automatically a press-ready PDF. Commercial printing may require a specific PDF/X version, color profile, bleed, resolution, compression, and overprint behavior; use the printer’s documented settings.

Quality and compatibility checks

Conversion cannot restore detail missing from embedded raster images. An image that is low-resolution in the EPS remains low-resolution in the PDF, even if the PDF page is enlarged. Inspect the result at 100% and at its intended print size.

Fonts can be substituted or rendered incorrectly when the converter cannot access the fonts referenced by the EPS. Install or embed the required fonts when live, selectable text is needed. Converting text to outlines can prevent font substitution, but outlined text is no longer editable or searchable.

PostScript features such as clipping paths, transparency, spot colors, gradients, imported images, and overprinting may be interpreted differently by conversion tools. Compare the PDF with the original using a color-managed viewer and a proofing workflow. Ask a commercial printer for its required PDF/X specification; PDF/X-1a and PDF/X-4 impose different handling of transparency, color, and other content.

The EPS bounding box determines the apparent PDF page size. An incorrect or oversized box can add whitespace, shift the artwork, or clip content. Correct the artboard, page boundary, or bounding box before exporting when exact dimensions are required.
