Free online EPS to DST converter

Embroidery machines and machine-control software often require DST when a logo arrives as an EPS from a designer. The conversion must turn vector artwork into stitch objects and needle commands; renaming .eps to .dst cannot produce a usable embroidery file.

What the EPS format is

EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) is a page-description format used for logos, illustrations, print production, signage, and cutting artwork. It can contain vector paths, fills, strokes, text, clipping paths, font references, and sometimes embedded raster images.

Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW, Affinity Designer, Inkscape, and desktop-publishing software can create EPS files. EPS preserves graphic geometry and visual instructions, but it contains no embroidery decisions: stitch types, density, underlay, pull compensation, stitch direction, sewing order, trims, thread assignments, or fabric settings.

What the DST format is

DST is a binary Tajima-compatible machine-embroidery format. It stores coded needle movements, including stitch and jump commands, plus stop or color-change events. Its small files and broad compatibility make it common for commercial and home embroidery machines.

DST is not an editable artwork or digitizing project file. It generally does not retain vector paths, layers, fonts, stitch settings, or reliable thread-brand and color values. Trim behavior also depends on how the exporting software encodes jumps and how the receiving machine interprets them.

How to convert EPS to DST

For a simple conversion attempt, the built-in converter on 101convert.com can accept an EPS and produce a DST without installing software:

1. Upload the source file, such as logo.eps.
2. Choose DST as the output format and start the conversion.
3. Download the resulting .dst file and open it in embroidery software or the machine manufacturer's software.
4. Check the design's physical dimensions, stitch count, color-change sequence, jumps, and hoop limits before transferring it to a machine.

Automatic conversion is most likely to work for a simple logo with clean, flat shapes. It may produce poor results when the source contains gradients, transparency, small lettering, complex overlaps, clipping effects, or raster images. Production work normally requires manual digitizing.

Manual digitizing with desktop software

1. Open or import the EPS in Inkscape, a commercial embroidery application, or another program that supports EPS. If import fails, the application may require Ghostscript for PostScript parsing. Do not open untrusted PostScript files.
2. Keep an untouched copy of the original. Install missing fonts or convert text to paths in the source application so lettering does not change between computers.
3. Remove or rebuild unsupported effects, embedded photographs, transparency, gradients, unnecessary clipping masks, hidden objects, and stray points. Set the intended finished size in millimeters or inches; EPS page dimensions do not determine a suitable embroidery size.
4. Separate the design into logical embroidery objects. Use running stitches for fine outlines, satin columns for suitable narrow borders and lettering, and fill stitches such as tatami for broad areas. Very wide shapes generally need split fills rather than a single satin column.
5. Assign stitch direction, stitch length, density, underlay, pull compensation, thread colors, and sewing order. Place larger background areas before details when that prevents small elements from being covered, and arrange travel paths to reduce unnecessary jumps and trims.
6. Set the target hoop and keep every object within its usable sewing area. Fabric, stabilizer, thread, needle, design size, and machine behavior all affect the appropriate settings.
7. Simulate the sewing sequence with the application's preview. Inspect short stitches, long jumps, overlaps, gaps, color changes, trims, stitch count, and areas that exceed the hoop.
8. Export using the application's DST or Tajima export command, such as File → Export, then reopen the file in the target machine software and verify its scale, orientation, colors, and machine limits.

Inkscape with the Ink/Stitch extension provides a free desktop workflow for assigning embroidery objects, previewing stitches, and exporting DST. Commercial applications such as Wilcom EmbroideryStudio, Hatch Embroidery Digitizer, Embird, and SewArt can import or trace suitable vector artwork, but exact EPS support and menu names vary by edition.

Quality and compatibility limits

• Artwork is not stitch-ready: automatic tracing cannot reliably choose stitch types, directions, density, underlay, compensation, or sequencing for a particular fabric.
• Fine detail has physical limits: thin lines, tiny counters, sharp corners, and narrow gaps can close, disappear, or become unreadable. Simplify, enlarge, or widen them for the selected design size.
• Visual effects change: gradients and transparency usually require solid thread areas or manually constructed effects; raster images must be traced or separately digitized.
• Fabric changes the result: knits and loose fabrics commonly need more stabilization, underlay, and compensation than firm woven fabric. Density that works on one material can cause puckering on another.
• Colors require checking: DST records color-change positions, not a universal RGB value or guaranteed thread-brand shade. Remap each color to the thread chart used by the machine.
• Machine behavior varies: confirm hoop dimensions, maximum design size, stitch-count limits, needle and color capacity, jump-to-trim settings, and how the machine handles stops and jumps.
• Test sewing is required: sew the design on comparable fabric with the intended stabilizer before production, particularly after an automatic conversion.
