How to convert eps to pes file

A Brother or Baby Lock embroidery machine requires a .PES stitch file, while a logo or illustration usually arrives as .EPS artwork. The design must therefore be digitized into stitches before it can be loaded into embroidery software or sent to the machine.

What the EPS format is

EPS, or Encapsulated PostScript, is a graphics format used for logos, illustrations, signage, and print production. It can contain vector paths, text, raster images, clipping paths, and color data; vector elements can be scaled without the pixelation associated with bitmap images.

Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW, Affinity Designer, and older PostScript publishing systems create or export EPS files. Print shops, design agencies, logo libraries, and legacy archives commonly supply artwork in this format.

What the PES format is

PES is an embroidery design format used mainly by Brother and Baby Lock machines and their associated software. It stores stitch coordinates, stitch types, thread changes, color information, design metadata, and, depending on the version, machine-specific settings.

Unlike EPS, PES does not describe general-purpose artwork. It describes embroidery operations such as running stitches, satin columns, fills, trims, jumps, underlay, and color changes. Its advantage is that compatible embroidery software or a machine can interpret those instructions directly.

How to convert the design

Changing .eps to .pes, or passing the file through a generic graphics converter, does not create usable embroidery. The EPS must be digitized: its shapes must be assigned stitch types, densities, directions, underlay, compensation, sewing order, and thread colors.

Desktop workflow with Inkscape and Ink/Stitch

  1. Install Inkscape, the Ink/Stitch extension, and Ghostscript if required by the EPS import process. Ink/Stitch is free and suitable for manual digitizing and stitch editing.
  2. Open the EPS with File → Open. If the installed Inkscape version cannot import EPS reliably, open the file in Illustrator, CorelDRAW, or another PostScript-capable application and export an SVG or PDF intermediary. Check the intermediary against the original because effects, clipping masks, gradients, and text can change.
  3. Delete print-only objects such as crop marks, hidden layers, background rectangles, and registration marks. Convert text to paths before export so missing fonts cannot alter the lettering.
  4. Set the final physical dimensions in millimetres or inches and select the intended embroidery hoop. Screen size and EPS scaling do not determine the machine’s sewing size.
  5. Assign an embroidery method to every object. Use running stitch for outlines and fine lines, satin stitch for narrow borders and lettering, and fill stitch for larger regions. Set stitch direction, density, underlay, pull compensation, and thread color for each object.
  6. Arrange the sewing order to reduce jumps and thread changes. Sew underlay before its covering satin or fill, and sequence overlapping objects from background to foreground where necessary.
  7. Run the Ink/Stitch simulator through Extensions → Ink/Stitch → Simulator. Check lettering, corners, satin-column width, jump stitches, excessive density, and areas likely to distort fabric.
  8. Export through Extensions → Ink/Stitch → Embroider, select PES, choose a compatible PES version if the dialog provides that option, and save the file as design.pes. Open it in embroidery software or the machine’s transfer utility before copying it to a USB drive or other media.

Professional software options

Wilcom EmbroideryStudio, Hatch Embroidery, and Brother PE-Design provide manual digitizing, lettering, stitch editing, density and compensation controls, hoop selection, and PES export. Import the EPS or an SVG/PDF intermediary, inspect every automatically generated object, correct the stitch parameters, then export through the program’s embroidery-format command.

Automatic digitizing can provide a starting layout but cannot reliably interpret every print design. Gradients, tiny details, overlapping paths, and unusual lettering usually require manual editing. Keep the software’s native project file as well as the exported .pes; the project preserves editable objects and settings that may not survive PES export.

Online services and converters

Generic online converters are not suitable for this job. Services that merely change the file container or convert EPS into another image format do not generate stitch instructions, and an apparently successful PES download may contain unusable or empty embroidery data.

An online custom-digitizing service can be appropriate when desktop software is unavailable. Choose a service that confirms PES output, asks for the target machine, hoop, fabric, dimensions, thread requirements, and lettering details, and supplies a stitch preview or sample sew-out for approval. Do not upload confidential artwork without checking retention and ownership terms. A human-reviewed digitizing service is different from an automated EPS-to-PES converter.

Quality and compatibility limits

Print artwork does not transfer one-to-one into stitches. Gradients must become stepped thread-color regions, transparency must be removed or redesigned, photographs must be simplified, and thin vector lines may need running stitches or may be too narrow to sew cleanly. Small printed text can become unreadable when embroidered.

Test the exported design on the intended fabric with the intended stabilizer, thread, needle, and hoop. Fabric stretch, hooping, stitch density, pull compensation, and needle choice affect the result more than the EPS file’s resolution.

Before transfer, confirm the machine’s maximum hoop size, supported PES version, color-change limit, filename restrictions, and transfer medium. A PES file may be valid but incompatible with a particular machine or software version, so open it in the target ecosystem and verify the stitch count, dimensions, colors, and sewing sequence.
