What the EPS format is

EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) is a vector graphics format used for logos, line art, and print artwork. Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW, Affinity Designer, and Inkscape can create or export EPS files. An EPS contains paths, fills, strokes, and sometimes embedded raster images, but it does not contain stitch order, stitch types, densities, underlay, trims, or machine commands.

In machine embroidery, EPS is usually the source artwork supplied by a customer or designer. It must be digitized before an embroidery machine can sew it.

What the PEC format is

PEC is a stitch-based embroidery format associated with Brother and compatible Baby Lock machines. A PEC file stores stitch coordinates, color-change information, thread-color references, and preview data in a form supported by many home embroidery machines and embroidery applications.

PEC is useful when the target machine or software specifically requires .pec. It is compact and widely supported in the Brother-compatible embroidery ecosystem, but it is not an editable vector format: changing artwork after conversion normally requires returning to the digitized design or its native project file.

How to actually convert EPS to PEC

5. Use File → Export or Save as, select PEC, and save the result as design.pec. Keep the application's native project file because PEC usually cannot preserve all editable digitizing settings.
6. Test-sew the design on fabric similar to the final item, then adjust density, underlay, compensation, or registration before production.

Quality and compatibility limitations

This is not a lossless vector-format change. Converting EPS to PEC translates geometry into stitches, so small details may disappear, curves become stepped stitch paths, and lettering may require embroidery-specific fonts rather than outline conversion.

Set the final size before export: enlarging a PEC file in machine software changes stitch spacing and can damage registration. Check the machine's maximum hoop area, supported PEC variant, color-change capacity, thread format, and file-transfer method. Some machines accept PEC only through compatible Brother software or media workflows.

PEC color information is generally a sequence and thread reference rather than a guaranteed physical thread match. Confirm colors against the thread system used by the machine. The original EPS and the digitizer's project file should be archived alongside the PEC because they preserve editable artwork and stitch parameters that the machine file may discard.
