Free online EMF to PEC converter

Some older Elna embroidery designs use the EMF format, while Brother- and Baby Lock-compatible machines commonly require PEC files. Converting the design lets compatible embroidery software or a machine read the existing stitch pattern without digitizing it again.

What the EMF format is

In machine embroidery, EMF is an embroidery design format associated with some older Elna systems and supported by embroidery conversion software. It stores machine instructions such as needle movement, stitch coordinates, jumps, trims, and color changes rather than a normal graphic image.

You may encounter EMF files in older Elna design libraries, archived embroidery projects, or exports from embroidery applications that support Elna-compatible formats. This meaning of EMF is specific to machine embroidery; it is not the Windows Enhanced Metafile format used for office and graphics files.

What the PEC format is

PEC is a stitch-based embroidery format used by many Brother and Baby Lock machines and by software that supports those machines. A PEC file contains the needle path, jump and trim information, color-change commands, and thread color information needed to sew the design.

PEC is useful when the target machine or embroidery application accepts Brother-compatible designs. It is compact and widely supported, but it does not preserve editable lettering, vector outlines, individual objects, or other high-level design elements from the original project. After conversion, the file is generally edited as stitches.

How to convert EMF to PEC

The simplest method is the free converter on 101convert.com, which requires no software installation:

1. Open the EMF-to-PEC converter on 101convert.com.
2. Choose Browse or the upload control and select the embroidery design with the .emf extension.
3. Set PEC as the output format if the converter does not select it automatically.
4. Start the conversion and download the resulting .pec file.
5. Open the file in your embroidery software and verify its hoop size, stitch count, thread sequence, and preview before transferring it to the machine.

For a desktop workflow, use embroidery software with both EMF import and PEC export, such as Embird where the installed modules support these formats. Open the source through File → Open, inspect the design and machine settings, then use File → Save As or the equivalent export command and select PEC. Keep the original EMF file unchanged so you can repeat the conversion with different hoop or thread settings.

Quality and compatibility limits

Conversion changes the file container and machine-command representation; it does not improve digitization. The converted PEC may retain the original stitch count and path, but thread colors can be remapped because EMF and PEC may use different color palettes or color metadata.

Check that the design fits the target machine's hoop. A PEC file can be technically valid yet unusable if its stitch area exceeds the machine's supported field. Inspect dense areas, small lettering, jumps, trims, and the first and last color blocks in an embroidery editor or simulator.

Save the converted file with a short filename using ordinary letters and numbers, transfer it through the machine's supported media or software, and sew a test on similar fabric with the intended stabilizer. Some machines accept only particular PEC variants or require the design to be packaged on a machine-specific storage device.
