What the VP3 format is

VP3 is a stitch-based embroidery format associated primarily with Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff systems. It stores stitch coordinates, color-change information, design sections, and embroidery settings rather than a printable image. VP3 files can be created or exported by software such as mySewnet and older 5D or PREMIER applications, and are commonly distributed with designs intended for Viking or Pfaff machines.

What the PEC format is

PEC is an embroidery format developed for Brother systems and supported by many Brother-compatible programs and machines, including some Baby Lock models. It contains the stitch sequence and a relatively limited thread-color representation. Its main advantage is compatibility with equipment that specifically accepts .pec files; it does not retain every piece of VP3 metadata, such as complete thread-brand information or native machine settings.

Check the machine manual before converting. Some newer Brother and Baby Lock models expect .pes rather than .pec, and a machine may also impose limits on hoop size, stitch count, filename length, or USB folder structure.

How to convert VP3 to PEC

1. Open the VP3 file in the embroidery application.
2. Inspect the design size, selected hoop, thread sequence, and stitch count.
3. Choose File → Save as or File → Export.
4. Select PEC, choose a destination, and save the converted file.
5. Reopen the saved PEC file in the same application to verify that it was written correctly.

Quality and compatibility checks

• Preview before stitching: Check the converted PEC file in embroidery software and, when available, on the machine’s preview screen.
• Verify dimensions: Confirm that the design fits the target hoop. Do not resize unnecessarily; enlarging or reducing a stitch file can cause excessive density, gaps, or distorted details.
• Check thread changes: PEC’s palette and color labels may not match the VP3 thread brand or original color names. Reassign colors manually if the machine uses a different thread chart.
• Inspect machine data: Conversion can remove thumbnails, native hoop settings, thread-brand metadata, and other VP3-specific information. Stitch geometry usually transfers, but jumps, trims, color stops, and sequencing should still be reviewed.
• Check machine limits: If the machine rejects the file, confirm that it accepts PEC, that the design uses a supported hoop, and that the filename and transfer media meet the machine’s requirements. Keep the original VP3 file as the editable backup.
