Brother and Baby Lock embroidery machines commonly require PEC files, so a design saved in the less widely supported PS format must be converted before transfer to a compatible machine or card. Conversion also makes the design easier to share with operators whose software imports PEC but not PS.

What the PS format is

In machine embroidery, PS is a less-standardized embroidery design format used by some digitizing and machine-design applications. A PS file can contain stitch coordinates, thread-color information, trims, and limited design metadata, but the exact structure depends on the software or equipment that created it.

You may encounter PS files in an older design archive, after exporting from specialized embroidery software, or when receiving a design from a machine ecosystem that does not use the more common DST, PES, JEF, or EXP formats. The extension alone does not identify the originating machine or guarantee compatibility; open the file in an embroidery editor or viewer to confirm its stitch layout, dimensions, and color sequence.

What the PEC format is

PEC is a stitch-based embroidery format associated primarily with Brother and Baby Lock home embroidery machines and compatible software. It stores the needle path, color blocks, and basic design information needed to sew the pattern.

PEC is useful when a machine, USB workflow, embroidery card, or editing program specifically lists PEC support. It is usually more suitable for direct machine transfer than a proprietary PS file, but it is not a full editable source format: object boundaries, digitizing settings, original thread brands, and some metadata may be reduced or discarded during export.

How to actually convert PS to PEC

Using the online converter

1. Make a copy of the original PS file. Keep the source unchanged in case the converted stitch file needs correction.
2. Open the PS to PEC converter on 101convert.com; the service can be used free without installing software.
3. Upload the PS file and select PEC as the output format. If the service asks for a machine size, choose the hoop that will actually be used for sewing.
4. Start the conversion and download the resulting .pec file only after the process reports completion.
5. Open the PEC file in the target machine's software or an embroidery editor. Check the design dimensions, stitch count, color order, start point, end point, and estimated sewing area before transferring it.

Using desktop embroidery software

If the PS file is rejected online or needs resizing and resequencing, use an embroidery editor that explicitly supports both the particular PS variant and PEC export, such as Embird or Wilcom EmbroideryStudio where the installed format modules provide that support.

1. Open the design through File → Open, then verify that the artwork appears as stitches rather than as an empty or distorted canvas.
2. Set the intended hoop and measure the design. Resize only within the limits of the digitizing quality; enlarging or reducing a stitch file does not recreate suitable density, underlay, or compensation.
3. Correct thread colors, excessive jumps, trims, and stitch order in the editor.
4. Export through File → Export or File → Save As, choose PEC, and save with a short filename using standard letters and numbers.
5. Load the PEC file into the machine software and run its preview or simulator before writing it to USB or another transfer medium.

Quality and compatibility limitations

PS-to-PEC conversion is normally a stitch-format translation, not a recovery of the original digitizing objects. The converter may remap thread colors, combine or split color blocks, remove unsupported commands, and replace trims or special machine functions with ordinary jumps.

Check that the PEC output fits the selected hoop and that its stitch count and maximum stitch length meet the machine's limits. A preview can reveal most placement and color-order problems, but sew a test sample on comparable fabric with the intended stabilizer: density, pull compensation, underlay, and fabric behavior are not reliably validated by file conversion alone.

Do not solve incompatibility by renaming .ps to .pec; the internal binary structure remains unchanged and the machine will usually reject it or display invalid stitches.
