Brother-compatible embroidery machines and software require PEC stitch files, while an AI file usually contains vector artwork from Adobe Illustrator. Converting the artwork for embroidery therefore requires digitizing shapes into stitches, not merely changing the filename extension.

What the AI format is

AI is Adobe Illustrator's native vector format. It stores paths, fills, strokes, text, layers, and other artwork instructions rather than needle movements. Embroidery designers commonly receive AI files as logos or illustrations that must be converted into stitch data.

Adobe Illustrator creates AI files, and compatible graphics applications may open or export them. An AI file has no stitch order, stitch type, density, underlay, pull compensation, thread sequence, or hoop settings, so it is not directly usable by an embroidery machine.

What the PEC format is

PEC is a stitch-based embroidery format associated with Brother and many Brother-compatible machines and embroidery programs. It stores needle coordinates, jumps, trims or color-block information, thread colors, and design blocks that the machine can sew.

PEC is useful when the target machine or software specifically requests it. Its compact structure is suitable for transferring finished designs, but it does not preserve editable vector objects. The machine follows the generated stitch sequence rather than interpreting the original AI artwork.

How to actually convert AI to PEC

Use embroidery digitizing software

1. Open the AI file in Adobe Illustrator and remove artwork that should not be embroidered, such as hidden objects, clipping masks, construction lines, and duplicate paths.
2. Convert text to outlines with Type → Create Outlines. Keep the artwork inside the intended embroidery hoop and simplify very small details.
3. Export a compatible vector intermediate with File → Export → Export As, selecting SVG. Preserve paths and avoid gradients, transparency effects, and filters that embroidery software may not interpret correctly.
4. Open the SVG in Inkscape with the Ink/Stitch extension installed. Convert imported objects to paths, check their scale, and assign each region a fill, satin column, running stitch, or other suitable stitch type.
5. Open the Ink/Stitch parameter dialog through Extensions → Ink/Stitch → Params. Set stitch density, underlay, pull compensation, stitch length, trims, object order, and thread colors for the fabric and design size.
6. Use the Ink/Stitch simulator to check stitch direction, jumps, trims, overlaps, and color changes. Correct narrow columns and crowded details before exporting.
7. Export through Extensions → Ink/Stitch → Embroider, choose PEC as the output format, and save the result as a new file such as design.pec.

Check the PEC file's hoop size, design dimensions, color sequence, thread palette, maximum stitch length, jump behavior, and trim handling against the target machine. PEC color information is approximate and may not match the thread brand loaded in the machine.

Always preview the stitch file and sew a test sample on similar fabric with the intended stabilizer. A design that looks correct as AI artwork can pucker, leave gaps, create excessive thread buildup, or produce unreadable lettering after digitization.
