What the AI format is

.ai is Adobe Illustrator’s native vector format. It stores paths, fills, strokes, text, gradients, and other artwork elements without defining thread colors, stitch direction, density, underlay, trims, or machine movement. AI files commonly come from Adobe Illustrator and are used as source artwork for embroidery digitizing.

What the XXX format is

.xxx is a machine embroidery format associated with Singer and Compurogram-compatible machines. It contains stitch coordinates, color-change information, and machine commands rather than editable vector shapes. XXX is useful when the target machine or embroidery software specifically lists XXX as a supported design format.

How to convert AI to XXX

For the best result, open the artwork in embroidery digitizing software such as Hatch Embroidery, Wilcom, Embird, or Ink/Stitch, then export the completed stitch design.

1. Open the AI file in Illustrator and remove hidden objects, clipping masks, duplicate paths, unnecessary effects, and live text. Convert text to outlines with Type → Create Outlines.
2. Save a simplified copy as SVG or PDF if the digitizing program cannot import AI directly. Preserve separate objects for areas that need different thread colors or stitch types.
3. Import the artwork into the digitizing program and assign fill, satin, or running-stitch objects. Set thread colors, stitch direction, density, underlay, pull compensation, trims, and the design’s final dimensions.
4. Arrange the stitch order to reduce jumps and unnecessary color changes. Add a starting point and ending point that suit the hoop and machine.
5. Run the program’s stitch simulation, correct overlaps and excessive jumps, and save the editable project file.
6. Choose File → Export or Save As, select XXX, set the required hoop size if offered, and save the design. Transfer the resulting file to the machine using its supported media or connection method.

Quality and compatibility limitations

AI artwork does not contain enough information to determine suitable stitches automatically. A direct conversion may create poorly ordered objects, unsuitable densities, long jumps, thread breaks, or details too small to sew. Small text, thin outlines, gradients, transparency, and complex effects usually need manual redesign.

XXX support varies by machine model and software version. Confirm the machine’s maximum hoop dimensions, thread-color limits, trim behavior, and accepted XXX variant before exporting. Keep the original AI file and the digitizing project because XXX is a machine-output format and is difficult to edit accurately after export.
