How to convert ai to dwg file

A logo, illustration, or technical graphic may need conversion when the recipient must edit it in AutoCAD or another CAD application. DWG provides editable CAD geometry, layers, dimensions, and layouts instead of Illustrator’s artwork structure.

What an AI file contains

AI is Adobe Illustrator’s native vector format. It stores paths, text, fills, strokes, clipping masks, artboards, appearance effects, and sometimes linked or embedded raster images. Illustrator is the primary application for creating AI files; applications such as CorelDRAW, InDesign, Photoshop, and some vector viewers can open or place them with varying feature support.

AI is not a CAD format. Its artboard coordinates, page size, graphic styles, and visual effects do not automatically correspond to engineering units, model space, CAD layers, or native drafting entities.

What a DWG file contains

DWG is the native drawing format associated with AutoCAD and is supported by applications such as BricsCAD, DraftSight, and ZWCAD. It stores 2D and 3D geometry, layers, blocks, dimensions, text, layouts, and drawing metadata for drafting, design, and engineering workflows.

DWG is the appropriate target when the recipient needs to edit the result in a CAD application. It generally preserves CAD entities and layers more effectively than a PDF, but it cannot preserve every Illustrator appearance feature.

How to convert an AI file to DWG

  1. Open the AI file in Adobe Illustrator and remove unused artwork, hidden objects, raster images, gradients, transparency, brushes, and effects that are not needed in CAD.
  2. Convert required text with Type → Create Outlines. This prevents font substitution, but the text becomes editable curves rather than CAD text. If text must remain text, record the required fonts and recreate or replace it in the CAD application instead.
  3. Set the Illustrator document or artboard to the intended physical size and confirm the target unit, such as millimeters or inches. Illustrator can use points, millimeters, inches, and other units; do not rely on the apparent screen size. A known dimension should be measured again after export.
  4. Use File → Export → Export As and select AutoCAD Drawing (*.DWG) when the installed Illustrator version provides that format. In the export options, choose a compatible AutoCAD release, drawing units, and scale. Available options vary by Illustrator version.
  5. Open the exported DWG in AutoCAD. Inspect the geometry, units, scale, layers, coordinates, and object types, then use File → Save As to select the required DWG release.

If Illustrator does not offer DWG export, use AutoCAD Interchange File (*.DXF) from the same export workflow. Open the DXF in AutoCAD, BricsCAD, DraftSight, or another compatible CAD application, correct the drawing, and save it as DWG. AutoCAD is a suitable final step when a specific DWG version or Autodesk compatibility is required; BricsCAD and DraftSight are practical desktop alternatives, although import behavior can differ.

Using an online converter

CloudConvert, Convertio, and Zamzar are established general-purpose conversion services, but direct AI-to-DWG support, file-size limits, and supported DWG versions can change. Confirm the service’s current input and output formats before uploading. If it produces only DXF, open that file in a CAD application and save it as DWG.

Online conversion is unsuitable for confidential designs, client material, or unreleased product drawings unless the organization has approved the service. Desktop conversion keeps the source file and intermediate geometry under local control.

Quality and compatibility limits

Illustrator paths may become lines, arcs, polylines, or splines. Gradients, brushes, live effects, transparency, linked images, clipping masks, and other appearance attributes may be omitted, flattened, or converted into large amounts of geometry. A visually similar result is not necessarily usable CAD geometry.

Illustrator layers do not always map cleanly to DWG layers. Reorganize layers after import, remove duplicate segments, and verify that required contours are closed before using them for hatching, cutting, extrusion, or area calculations. Rebuild dimensions, hatches, title blocks, and CAD text in the destination application when manufacturing or construction accuracy matters.

In AutoCAD, run the AUDIT command and inspect its repair report. Check UNITS, measure a known distance, and look for open contours, excessive spline points, duplicate geometry, unwanted blocks, and incorrect coordinates. For critical work, compare the converted drawing with the source at a documented scale and validate it against the project’s dimensional requirements.
