AutoCAD and other CAD applications require DWG when an Illustrator drawing must become editable technical geometry. Converting an AI file also provides a CAD-compatible file for engineering teams, measurement, layering, and incorporation into larger drawings.

What the AI format is

AI is Adobe Illustrator's native vector graphics format, used by illustrators, graphic designers, and print-production teams for logos, diagrams, maps, packaging, and layouts. It stores paths, shapes, text, fills, strokes, clipping masks, artboards, gradients, transparency, appearance effects, and sometimes embedded or linked raster images.

AI is a page-oriented illustration format rather than a CAD format. Its artboard coordinates, graphic styles, and visual effects do not automatically correspond to engineering units, model space, CAD layers, or native drafting entities. Some AI files contain a PDF-compatible section, but that does not make them CAD drawings.

What the DWG format is

DWG is a CAD drawing format associated with AutoCAD and supported by applications including BricsCAD, DraftSight, and ZWCAD. It stores 2D and 3D entities such as lines, arcs, circles, polylines, splines, text, dimensions, blocks, layers, layouts, and drawing metadata.

DWG uses CAD coordinates and drawing objects, so it is better suited than AI or PDF for editing geometry, measuring known distances, assigning layers, and adding a drawing to an engineering project. DWG files are version-dependent: a newer file may not open in an older CAD application.

How to convert an AI file to DWG

1. Open the file in Adobe Illustrator. Check the artboard size, document units, artwork scale, layer names, text, and linked images. Remove unused or hidden artwork.
2. Remove or simplify gradients, transparency, brushes, shadows, live effects, and other appearance features that have no direct CAD equivalent. Delete raster images unless they are needed only as visual references.
3. Convert text that must preserve its exact appearance with Type → Create Outlines. Outlined text becomes curves, not editable CAD text. If the recipient needs searchable or editable text, keep a text list and recreate the text in the CAD application using an available font.
4. Set the intended physical units, such as millimeters or inches, and identify at least one known dimension. Do not use the apparent screen size as a scale reference.
5. In Illustrator, choose File → Export → Export As and select AutoCAD Interchange File (DXF) when available. Choose the required DXF version, measurement units, and scale. Illustrator versions and export options vary.
6. Open the resulting .dxf file in AutoCAD, BricsCAD, DraftSight, or another CAD application. Check the insertion scale, units, coordinates, layers, object types, and known dimension.
7. Save the checked drawing with File → Save As, choose the DWG version required by the recipient, and create the .dwg file.

Some Illustrator installations also provide AutoCAD Drawing (*.DWG) under File → Export → Export As. If that option is present, select the required AutoCAD release, units, and scale, then still inspect the result in CAD. DXF is the more commonly used Illustrator-to-CAD intermediate format; converting DXF to DWG in a CAD application gives better control over the final DWG version and cleanup.

Quality and compatibility limits

Illustrator paths may become lines, arcs, polylines, or splines. Fills, gradients, transparency, brushes, clipping masks, effects, linked images, and complex appearance stacks may be discarded, flattened, or converted into large amounts of geometry. A visually similar DWG is not automatically suitable for engineering calculations.

Illustrator layers may not map cleanly to DWG layers, and object order or grouping may change. Reorganize layers after import, remove duplicate segments, and check that required contours are closed before hatching, cutting, extrusion, or area calculations. Rebuild dimensions, hatches, title blocks, and CAD text in the destination application when dimensional accuracy matters.

Check the drawing units and measure a known distance after conversion. Inspect open contours, duplicate lines, excessive spline points, incorrect coordinates, unwanted blocks, missing objects, and artwork positioned far from the origin. In AutoCAD, run AUDIT and review its repair report. For critical work, compare the converted geometry with the source at a documented scale and validate it against the project's dimensional requirements.
