Convert AI to CRD

A print shop or design application may require CorelDRAW artwork, but a request for .crd is often a mistaken reference to .cdr. The correct conversion depends on the application that created or opens the requested CRD file.

What the AI format is

.ai is Adobe Illustrator's native artwork format. It can contain vector paths, text, layers, clipping masks, gradients, transparency, placed images, and Illustrator-specific effects. Illustrator users, branding agencies, print designers, and stock-art providers commonly exchange AI files.

AI is partly proprietary, although Illustrator can save a PDF-compatible representation when Create PDF Compatible File is enabled. Other applications may use that embedded PDF data for import, but they cannot necessarily reproduce Illustrator effects or preserve full editability.

What the CRD format is

.crd is not a standardized vector-graphics format. Different card-file, database, and specialized applications use the extension for unrelated internal formats. A CRD file produced for one application may be unreadable by another, so no universal AI-to-CRD conversion exists.

Confirm the requested extension and destination software before converting. If the file is intended for CorelDRAW, the correct target is normally .cdr, CorelDRAW's native document format. CDR supports editable vector artwork, text, pages, layers, and CorelDRAW-specific document data, but it is not an open interchange standard.

How to create a genuine CRD file

1. Ask the recipient which program and version must open the file, and request a sample CRD file or the program's import specifications.
2. Check whether that program imports AI directly. If it instead accepts SVG, PDF, EPS, DXF, or another format, export the artwork from Illustrator through File → Export → Export As or File → Save a Copy.
3. Open the exported file in the destination program and use that program's File → Save As or Export command to create its CRD variant.

Changing design.ai to design.crd only changes the filename; it does not change the file's internal format. Generic online converters cannot safely produce CRD without knowing the target application's specification.

How to convert AI to CDR

1. Install a current desktop release of CorelDRAW Graphics Suite and open a new document.
2. Choose File → Import, select the AI file, and accept the import options. If the AI file lacks PDF-compatible content, CorelDRAW may not be able to interpret it; ask the sender to resave it with Create PDF Compatible File enabled.
3. Inspect page size, object positions, clipping masks, gradients, transparency, placed images, and text. Resolve missing fonts or convert text to outlines when visual appearance matters more than text editing.
4. Choose File → Save As, select CDR - CorelDRAW, and save the document. Provide a PDF proof separately when the file is intended for printing.

Adobe Illustrator cannot natively save CDR or an unspecified CRD file. It can create intermediate SVG, EPS, and PDF files through its export or save-copy commands. Online services such as CloudConvert and Zamzar may convert AI to formats such as PDF, SVG, or EPS, but their available targets change; verify the format list and use them only for nonconfidential artwork. They do not replace CorelDRAW or the application that defines a particular CRD variant.

Quality and compatibility limits

AI-to-CDR import can alter live brushes, mesh gradients, Illustrator appearance stacks, blend modes, effects, linked images, transparency, and text spacing. Keep linked images available or embed them before transfer through Window → Links. Supply the original fonts where licensing permits; outlining text prevents font substitution but removes normal text editing.

Compare the imported CDR file with a PDF exported from Illustrator at the intended dimensions. For production printing, retain a PDF/X export as a fallback. If the recipient needs continued vector editing, simplify or recreate unsupported effects only after checking the imported result.
