Convert AI to CDR

A print shop, sign-making workstation, or CorelDRAW user may require an editable .cdr file instead of an Adobe Illustrator document. Converting the artwork also provides a native CorelDRAW file for editing, production, or handoff, but the result must be checked because the formats use different object models.

What the AI format is

.ai is Adobe Illustrator Artwork, a proprietary format created primarily by Adobe Illustrator. It stores vector paths, fills, strokes, text, clipping masks, gradients, transparency, effects, and sometimes linked or embedded raster images. Vector objects can be resized without the resolution loss associated with raster images, although an AI document can contain raster content.

AI is common for logos, packaging, illustrations, advertising layouts, cutting files, embroidery artwork, and print production. Many AI files saved with Illustrator's Create PDF Compatible File option contain an embedded PDF representation. Compatible applications can use that representation when they cannot interpret Illustrator-specific data, but it does not guarantee complete editability.

What the CDR format is

.cdr is CorelDRAW's native document format. It supports editable vector artwork, multiple pages, layers, text, page layouts, dimensions, outlines, and CorelDRAW-specific effects and production objects.

CDR is appropriate when the recipient edits in CorelDRAW or uses a workflow configured for that application. It is version-dependent: a newer CorelDRAW release may create a CDR document that an older release cannot open, and saving for an older version can change or remove unsupported features.

Convert with CorelDRAW

1. Copy the original AI file so the source remains unchanged.
2. In CorelDRAW, choose File → Open and select the AI file. Depending on the file and CorelDRAW version, the application may use an AI importer or the file's embedded PDF content.
3. Choose the import option that retains vector objects when one is offered. If CorelDRAW cannot open the file, first resave it from Illustrator as an older compatible AI version or export it as PDF or EPS.
4. Inspect the result at 100% and at production size. Check page dimensions, layers, clipping masks, gradients, transparency, strokes, linked images, and object positions.
5. Resolve missing fonts. Keep text editable only when the recipient has the required fonts. Otherwise duplicate the text and use Object → Convert to Curves in CorelDRAW; outlined text no longer depends on font availability but cannot be edited as text.
6. Choose File → Save As, select CDR - CorelDRAW, and save the document. If the save dialog provides a version selector, choose the recipient's CorelDRAW version.
7. Close and reopen the saved CDR, then verify the artwork again before delivery or production.

When preparing the AI source in Illustrator, enable Save As → Create PDF Compatible File if available. This increases the file size but gives compatible applications a PDF fallback. It does not preserve every Illustrator live effect or guarantee that imported objects remain separately editable.

Fallback formats

If direct opening fails, export a copy from Illustrator as .eps or print-ready .pdf, then import it into CorelDRAW. EPS generally preserves paths and basic fills but can lose transparency, live effects, appearance attributes, and some gradients. PDF often preserves modern vector artwork more accurately, but CorelDRAW may import text, masks, transparency, and effects differently from the original.

Convert text to outlines before exporting only when font substitution is unacceptable; retain a separate editable source with live text. Windows Metafile (.wmf) is a limited fallback for simple artwork, not a suitable choice for complex gradients, transparency, effects, or production layouts.

Use an online converter

An online service such as Convertio may offer AI-to-CDR conversion when that combination is listed in its current format selector. Upload the file, select CDR as the output, start the conversion, download the result, and open it in CorelDRAW for inspection.

Online conversion is unsuitable for confidential client artwork, unreleased designs, or files containing sensitive data unless the provider's retention and processing terms are acceptable. Services may rasterize unsupported objects, substitute fonts, flatten transparency, omit linked images, or produce a CDR that is technically valid but less editable than a document created natively in CorelDRAW.

Quality and compatibility checks

Illustrator meshes, pattern fills, blend modes, live effects, appearance stacks, variable fonts, complex clipping masks, and linked images are common sources of conversion differences. Embedded or linked bitmaps may require separate verification in CorelDRAW; package external images with the CDR or embed them when the workflow requires a self-contained file.

For cutting, engraving, and sign production, check that paths are closed, duplicate objects are removed, hairline outlines have the intended meaning, and strokes are converted to outlines where the machine workflow requires filled shapes. For print production, verify page size, bleed, CMYK values, overprint settings, transparency, and the final PDF separately; saving as CDR does not validate those settings.
