Print shops, legacy graphics applications, sign-making systems, and publishing tools may accept EPS but not Illustrator’s native AI format. Converting the file provides a compatible exchange copy while preserving scalable vector artwork for supported elements.

What the AI format is

.ai is Adobe Illustrator’s native artwork format. It stores vector paths, text, gradients, meshes, symbols, artboards, transparency, linked assets, and Illustrator-specific editing data. AI files are commonly used for logos, illustrations, packaging, signage, and prepress artwork.

An AI file may also contain an embedded PDF-compatible representation when Create PDF Compatible File was enabled at save time. Software that cannot read Illustrator’s native structure may open that PDF data, but Illustrator-only features can be missing or altered.

What the EPS format is

.eps is an Encapsulated PostScript file containing PostScript instructions for a page element or illustration. It can contain vector paths, text, raster images, and an optional preview bitmap used by applications that do not render PostScript directly.

EPS remains useful with older prepress software, sign-cutting systems, stock-asset workflows, and other applications that require a single scalable graphic. Its limitations are significant: it does not preserve Illustrator artboards or all live editing data, and modern transparency, effects, variable fonts, complex meshes, and some gradients may be flattened, rasterized, or changed during export.

How to convert the file

Adobe Illustrator

1. Open the source, such as logo.ai, in Illustrator.
2. Check fonts, linked images, clipping masks, overprint settings, colors, and document dimensions. Embed linked images when the recipient will not receive the original assets.
3. Choose File → Save As or File → Save a Copy, select Illustrator EPS (eps), and save a separate file such as logo.eps. Keep the original AI file unchanged.
4. In EPS Options, choose the newest Illustrator compatibility version supported by the receiving application. A lower version may be necessary for old production equipment.
5. Select an appropriate preview and confirm the document’s color settings. If the artwork contains transparency, use the available transparency-flattening settings required by the selected EPS compatibility level and inspect the result.
6. Reopen the EPS in Illustrator and, preferably, in the application that will use it. Check the actual artwork rather than relying only on its preview thumbnail.

Other desktop software

Inkscape and some professional graphics applications can import AI files and export EPS, but compatibility depends on the AI file’s embedded PDF data. Inkscape is most likely to open an AI file successfully when Create PDF Compatible File was enabled. Illustrator-specific effects, live type, meshes, transparency, and layer structure may not survive; EPS support can also depend on Ghostscript and the installed application version.

Quality and compatibility limits

Do not outline every object automatically. Outline text only on a copy when the destination lacks the required fonts or font substitution would be unacceptable; otherwise, preserve live text in the AI master. Expand appearance or strokes when the receiving cutter or graphics system requires ordinary paths rather than live effects or variable-width strokes.

EPS does not provide a universal solution for modern transparency. Transparency may be flattened into opaque regions, and this can create seams, changed overprints, or altered blend effects. Inspect small text, clipping boundaries, gradients, shadows, and overprinting after export.

Before delivery, confirm the production provider’s required color space, spot-color names, bleed, page dimensions, font policy, and EPS compatibility version. Preserve the AI source because the EPS copy may lose layers, artboards, live effects, editability, and Illustrator-only data.
