Free online DXF to EPS converter

Some print, prepress, and legacy illustration applications require EPS and cannot use a CAD-native DXF drawing. Converting creates a portable 2D vector file for placing technical line art in page-layout or graphics software, but it does not preserve the full CAD model.

What DXF is

DXF (Drawing Exchange Format) is a CAD exchange format developed by Autodesk. It can be stored as text or binary data and may contain lines, arcs, circles, polylines, splines, dimensions, blocks, layers, hatches, text, and 3D entities.

AutoCAD and AutoCAD-based applications create DXF files. DraftSight, BricsCAD, QCAD, LibreCAD, CAM systems, GIS software, laser-cutting workflows, CNC systems, and sign-making applications can also read or write them. DXF is commonly used to transfer technical drawings between CAD programs or send 2D geometry to manufacturing equipment.

What EPS is

EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) is a graphics format containing PostScript drawing instructions and a bounding box that defines the artwork area. An EPS file can also contain a low-resolution preview for screen display, along with vector paths, strokes, fills, text, and embedded bitmap images.

EPS remains useful in older print and prepress workflows, illustration applications, RIPs, and some desktop-publishing systems. Its paths scale without the resolution loss of a raster image, making it suitable for logos, diagrams, plotter-style drawings, and press output. EPS does not retain editable CAD layers, constraints, model-space metadata, manufacturing attributes, or usable 3D solids.

Convert with the built-in online converter

2. Upload the DXF file and select EPS as the output format.
3. Start the conversion and download the generated EPS file.
4. Open the result in the intended graphics, layout, or print application and check its scale, placement, lineweights, text, and bounding box.

This option requires no software installation and is suitable for occasional conversions. Do not upload confidential engineering drawings until you have checked the service's privacy and file-retention terms.

Convert from AutoCAD

1. Open the DXF in AutoCAD and verify drawing units, layer visibility, colors, lineweights, text styles, and scale.
2. Choose the required layout or select the model-space objects for export. Set the paper size, plot area, and intended plot scale.
3. Run the EPSOUT command, choose the layout or selected objects, and save the output as drawing.eps.
4. Inspect the EPS in a PostScript-aware graphics or layout application.

AutoCAD is generally the safest desktop choice for DXF files containing complex hatches, dimensions, blocks, or AutoCAD-specific entities because it can interpret those objects before writing PostScript.

Convert with Inkscape

1. Install a current Inkscape release with DXF import support. Select File → Open, choose the DXF, and set the correct import unit and scale when prompted.
2. Inspect the imported drawing at high zoom. Hide or delete construction geometry, correct missing fonts, and set strokes and fills in the Fill and Stroke panel.
3. Use File → Save a Copy or File → Export, choose EPS or PostScript if that format is available in the installed release, and save drawing.eps.
4. If EPS is not offered, save an intermediate drawing.svg and open it in an EPS-capable desktop graphics application for the final export.

Inkscape is useful for simple 2D line drawings, but its DXF importer may not reproduce every CAD entity, dimension style, hatch, font, or 3D object. Verify the visual result instead of treating a completed export as proof of data fidelity.

Quality and compatibility limits

• Scale and page size: DXF model space does not impose one universal paper size, while EPS uses a bounding box measured in PostScript points. Set units, page size, plot area, and scale before exporting or the EPS may open at an unexpected size.
• CAD data loss: The result normally contains paths, strokes, fills, and text or text outlines rather than editable DXF layers, dimensions, blocks, constraints, or object intelligence. Keep the original DXF as the source file.
• Fonts: Missing CAD fonts can be substituted or rendered incorrectly. Use available fonts or convert text to outlines when visual consistency matters; outlining prevents later text editing.
• Hatches and splines: Dense hatch patterns and detailed spline approximations can produce very large EPS files or render differently in older PostScript interpreters. Simplify geometry only after preserving the original drawing.
• 3D content: EPS is a 2D output format. Export a selected 2D view or flattened projection; 3D solids, cameras, and interactive object properties will not remain in the EPS.
• Verification: Open the EPS in the final print or layout application and check clipping, lineweights, fills, symbols, text, page placement, and the bounding box. Print or rasterize a proof when output accuracy matters.
