Convert dxf to dwg

Free online DXF to DWG converter

Convert CAD drawings from DXF to editable DWG while checking units, versions, and missing data.

Convert DXF to DWG online - free

Uploading…

AutoCAD version

Older AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT open only drawings saved in their own or an earlier version. Auto keeps the file's version (DWT and BAK are only renamed) and saves DXF as 2018.

Your file is processed instantly and deleted as soon as you download it.

How it works

  1. 1/3

    Upload your .dxf file

Click to browse to select your file you want to convert or simply drag & drop your file into selected area.

  2. 2/3

    Perform .dxf to .dwg conversion

After successful file upload, click to convert when you are ready.

  3. 3/3

    Download converted .dwg file

Conversion result is ready to download.

How to convert dxf to dwg file

AutoCAD and other CAD systems may require DWG for editing, plotting, or project delivery when a drawing arrives as DXF. Converting it also provides a smaller binary file for storage and sharing, but the result must be checked for missing application-specific data.

What the DXF format is

DXF, or Drawing Exchange Format, is a CAD interchange format developed by Autodesk. It stores drawing entities such as lines, arcs, circles, polylines, text, dimensions, layers, blocks, hatch patterns, and selected three-dimensional objects.

DXF files can be ASCII text or binary. ASCII DXF is readable by many applications and is commonly used to exchange geometry between different CAD vendors. AutoCAD, BricsCAD, DraftSight, LibreCAD, QCAD, and many engineering, GIS, CAM, and vector-design programs can create or import DXF.

DXF is often supplied when a manufacturer, surveyor, laser cutter, or CNC operator needs an interchange file rather than the sender's native CAD format. Support varies between applications: an importer may preserve basic geometry while ignoring proxy objects, parametric constraints, custom objects, or advanced annotation data.

What the DWG format is

DWG is a native binary drawing format used by AutoCAD and supported by many professional CAD applications. It can store geometry, layers, blocks, layouts, viewports, dimensions, text styles, line types, materials, external references, and application-specific object data in a structured drawing database.

DWG is often more compact and faster to load than an equivalent ASCII DXF. It is the usual delivery format for AutoCAD projects because it supports model space, paper space, plotting settings, and richer native object behavior. Use it when the recipient edits the drawing in AutoCAD or a compatible CAD system, or when layouts and plotting configuration must be retained.

DWG releases are not universally backward-compatible. Select a target release supported by the recipient, such as an older AutoCAD Drawing version, rather than automatically saving in the newest format.

How to convert the file

Using AutoCAD

  1. Make a backup of the original .dxf file.
  2. Open the file with File → Open. If AutoCAD requests DXF import options, select the correct units and compatible DXF version.
  3. Inspect the drawing in model space. Check the geometry, units, layers, blocks, dimensions, text, line types, hatches, and three-dimensional content.
  4. Use the AUDIT command and allow AutoCAD to fix detected errors. Run PURGE only if you want to remove unused layers, blocks, styles, and other definitions.
  5. Choose File → Save As, select an AutoCAD Drawing type such as AutoCAD 2018 Drawing (*.dwg), select the destination, and save.
  6. Close and reopen the resulting DWG. Verify its scale, layouts, external references, and plotted output.

AutoCAD can also save the open drawing with the SAVEAS command. For older recipients, choose their supported DWG release in the save dialog.

Using ODA File Converter

ODA File Converter is a desktop utility for batch conversion between supported DXF and DWG versions. Select the input folder, output folder, source format, target format, and target DWG version, then start the conversion. It is useful for processing multiple drawings without opening each one in a full CAD editor. Open the results in a CAD application afterward, particularly when the files contain custom objects, proxy entities, or external references.

Converting without installing software

You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software: upload the DXF, choose DWG as the output format, start the conversion, and download the result. Do not upload confidential engineering drawings unless the service's storage, retention, and privacy terms are acceptable for the project.

Quality and compatibility limits

Basic two-dimensional geometry usually converts reliably, but conversion cannot restore information that was not exported to DXF. The source may already have omitted AutoCAD-specific objects, dynamic-block behavior, constraints, custom proxy objects, raster references, font files, or application metadata.

Check drawing units explicitly. DXF coordinates may be unitless or may contain an unreliable unit declaration, so an import setting of millimeters, inches, or another unit can change the apparent scale. Measure a known distance with DIST or a CAD measurement tool before saving.

Text can change when the original SHX or TrueType fonts are unavailable. Missing fonts may alter character spacing, line breaks, and annotation placement. Hatches, dimensions, splines, proxy objects, and complex three-dimensional entities can also be approximated or displayed differently.

External references are normally separate files rather than embedded content. Keep Xrefs, raster images, plot style files, and fonts with the DWG project. In AutoCAD, ETRANSMIT can package a drawing with its dependent files.

For manufacturing, construction, or other high-stakes work, compare critical dimensions, layer visibility, block attributes, layouts, and plotted output with the source before issuing the converted DWG.
