A TIFF is useful when a CAD drawing must be opened by a scanning, publishing, document-management, or image-processing system that does not read DXF. Converting also preserves a fixed visual snapshot for archiving or sharing, but it changes editable vector geometry into raster pixels.

What the DXF format is

DXF, or Drawing Exchange Format, is a CAD interchange format developed by Autodesk for exchanging 2D and 3D drawing data. It stores entities such as lines, arcs, circles, polylines, dimensions, text, blocks, layers, and some three-dimensional objects as structured drawing records.

AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT create DXF files, and most mechanical, architectural, surveying, and civil CAD programs can read or write them. You typically encounter DXF when transferring a drawing between different CAD applications, sending geometry to a fabrication workflow, or receiving an editable drawing without using the original .dwg format.

What the TIFF format is

TIFF is a tagged raster-image format commonly used for scanned documents, technical illustrations, print production, and long-term image storage. A TIFF records pixels rather than CAD entities, so lines cannot be edited as lines after conversion.

TIFF supports high resolutions, grayscale and full-color images, lossless LZW or ZIP compression, and uncompressed output. It is appropriate when a receiving system requires an image, when consistent page appearance matters more than editability, or when a drawing must be embedded in a document archive. TIFF files are usually larger than JPEG files but avoid JPEG compression artifacts around fine linework.

How to actually convert DXF to TIFF

Use the built-in online converter

1. Open the DXF-to-TIFF conversion page on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the .dxf file and select TIFF as the output format.
3. Set the page or drawing area, paper size, orientation, scale, color mode, and resolution if those controls are available. Use 300 DPI for ordinary document output and 600 DPI for small text or detailed technical linework.
4. Start the conversion and download the resulting .tif or .tiff file.

This method requires no software installation, but inspect the result for missing fonts, incorrect line weights, clipped extents, and unwanted layers before distributing it.

Plot from a desktop CAD application

1. Open the DXF in AutoCAD or another CAD program that supports TIFF plotting.
2. Check units, visible layers, lineweights, text styles, and the drawing extents.
3. Choose File → Plot or File → Print, select a TIFF raster plotter or TIFF printer installed with the CAD software, and configure the required paper size.
4. Set the plot area to Window, Extents, or Layout; choose the intended scale rather than relying on automatic fitting when dimensional accuracy matters.
5. Choose monochrome or color output, set the raster resolution, enable plot styles if the drawing uses them, and create the TIFF.

If the CAD program has no TIFF driver, export to a lossless intermediate such as PDF or SVG, then rasterize that file with an installed graphics or document application. A PDF retains page size and vector geometry until the final rasterization step, which generally produces cleaner lines than taking a screen capture.

Quality and compatibility considerations

DXF has no single page presentation: model-space extents, layouts, viewport settings, layers, fonts, units, and plot styles determine the rendered appearance. A converter that reads only geometry may ignore layout sheets, custom fonts, dimension styles, proxy objects, or embedded raster references.

Choose the TIFF pixel dimensions from the required physical size and resolution. For example, an A4 page at 300 DPI is approximately 2480 × 3508 pixels; enlarging a low-resolution result later cannot restore line detail. Use monochrome or grayscale for black-line drawings when color is unnecessary, and select LZW or ZIP compression when the receiving system supports it.

TIFF is normally a single fixed image per page. A multi-sheet DXF may therefore produce separate TIFF files or a multipage TIFF, depending on the converter. Confirm that the target application supports multipage TIFF before selecting that output. Verify the scale with a known dimension after conversion, because a visually correct TIFF may not remain measurable unless its DPI and physical page metadata are preserved.
