How to convert dxf to gbr file

PCB manufacturers and CAM systems require Gerber artwork, while board outlines and mechanical data are often supplied as DXF drawings. Conversion is needed when that geometry must become a board-outline, copper, silkscreen, or other fabrication layer; changing .dxf to .gbr does not perform the conversion.

What the DXF format is

DXF (Drawing Exchange Format) is an Autodesk-developed interchange format for 2D and 3D CAD data. It can contain lines, arcs, circles, polylines, splines, text, dimensions, blocks, layers, and some 3D entities. AutoCAD, DraftSight, BricsCAD, LibreCAD, QCAD, Fusion, and other CAD systems create or open DXF files.

PCB designers and mechanical engineers use DXF for board outlines, mounting-hole locations, panel dimensions, enclosure clearances, logos, and mechanical drawings. DXF layers are only drawing categories: a layer named Outline does not automatically become a PCB edge, and DXF does not define copper, solder mask, silkscreen, drill data, electrical nets, or fabrication intent.

What the GBR format is

.gbr commonly identifies a Gerber artwork file used in printed-circuit-board manufacturing. Each Gerber file represents one two-dimensional layer using coordinates, apertures, draws, flashes, filled regions, and polarity. Modern RS-274X files normally contain their own aperture definitions; Gerber X2 attributes are optional metadata and are not accepted by every CAM workflow.

A complete PCB job usually contains separate files for front and back copper, solder mask, silkscreen, paste, and the board outline. Filenames may use extensions such as .gbr, .gtl, .gbl, .gto, .gbo, .gts, .gbs, or .gko. Hole locations are normally supplied separately as Excellon drill files such as .drl. Gerber's main advantage is that it provides precise, scalable vector artwork in a format supported by PCB CAM and photoplotting systems, with one unambiguous manufacturing layer per file.

How to convert DXF to GBR

For a simple 2D drawing, the built-in converter on 101convert.com can convert the file without installing software: select DXF as the source and GBR as the target, upload the drawing, start the conversion, and download the result. Treat this as a geometry conversion, not as automatic PCB design; inspect the output and assign or verify its manufacturing meaning before fabrication.

For a fabrication-ready workflow, KiCad PCB Editor provides better control because it imports the geometry into a board and lets you assign PCB layers before plotting:

  1. Open PCB Editor and create a blank board with File → New Board, or open the board that will contain the geometry. Confirm the source drawing's units and set KiCad to millimetres or inches as appropriate.
  2. Import the DXF with File → Import → Graphics or the equivalent graphics-import command in the installed KiCad version. Choose the destination layer and use a scale of 1.0 unless the source was intentionally created in different units.
  3. Assign the geometry according to its purpose. Use Edge.Cuts for a board perimeter, F.Cu or B.Cu for copper, and the appropriate front or back silkscreen layer for markings. DXF layers do not perform this assignment automatically.
  4. Before importing, or after import, remove dimensions, title blocks, center marks, construction lines, and unrelated annotations. Convert unsupported blocks or splines to suitable lines and arcs when necessary. A scale mistake can enlarge or shrink the drawing by 25.4 or by its inverse.
  5. For an outline, make the perimeter a closed, planar contour. Repair gaps, duplicate segments, self-intersections, overlaps, and stray geometry. For filled artwork, verify that the intended regions are closed and that line widths represent the required manufacturing features.
  6. Check the board at 1:1 scale and confirm a known dimension, orientation, clearances, feature widths, cutouts, and layer registration. Use Inspect → Design Rules Checker to find invalid board geometry; a DRC cannot determine whether a mechanically drawn line was intended as copper or an edge.
  7. Plot the required layers with File → Plot or File → Fabrication Outputs → Gerbers, depending on the KiCad version. Select only the layers intended for manufacture and save the files to a new folder. Generate Excellon data separately with the drill-file command in the same fabrication-output workflow; a Gerber export does not create drill data.
  8. Open every output in KiCad Gerber Viewer or another installed Gerber viewer. Check dimensions, polarity, apertures, filled regions, slots, cutouts, layer alignment, and bottom-layer orientation before delivering the complete Gerber and drill set to the manufacturer.

FlatCAM can be used when the DXF contains machining or isolation geometry rather than a complete PCB layout. Import the 2D geometry, configure units and apertures, assign the intended CAM operation, and export Gerber. It does not infer a PCB layer stack, electrical connectivity, solder-mask clearances, or drill attributes.

Quality and compatibility limits

DXF describes geometry; Gerber describes manufacturing artwork. No converter can reliably infer whether an arbitrary line is copper, a board edge, a slot, silkscreen, or documentation. A DXF containing only an outline cannot produce missing copper, mask, silkscreen, or drill layers.

Gerber is two-dimensional. Solids, associative dimensions, unsupported block contents, and splines may be flattened, approximated, or omitted. Use simple closed polylines, lines, and arcs for critical outlines, and confirm the result against the original CAD dimensions.

Confirm the manufacturer's required units, coordinate precision, zero suppression, polarity, layer names, minimum feature size, and accepted Gerber variant. Send the complete layer set and any required Excellon files, not an isolated .gbr file. A final 1:1 viewer check is required because correct-looking artwork can still be unusable when units, mirroring, polarity, or contour closure is wrong.
