What the DXF format is

DXF (Drawing Exchange Format) is an Autodesk CAD format for exchanging drawing data between AutoCAD and other technical-design applications. A DXF can contain lines, arcs, polylines, circles, dimensions, text, hatches, blocks, layers, and some 3D entities.

AutoCAD, BricsCAD, DraftSight, QCAD, and LibreCAD can create or edit DXF files. DXF commonly appears when a drawing moves between CAD systems, enters a CNC or laser-cutting workflow, or must be opened without the original application's project format. Files may use ASCII text or binary encoding; compatibility depends on the DXF version and the entities, fonts, blocks, and references used.

What the JPEG format is

JPEG is a compressed raster image format identified by .jpg and .jpeg. It stores a fixed grid of pixels rather than CAD entities, making it widely usable in email, web pages, reports, presentations, and software that accepts images but not CAD files.

JPEG's small file size suits previews and screen sharing, but its lossy compression can blur thin lines and create artifacts around text and high-contrast edges. PNG is usually better for precise line drawings, while PDF is generally better when vector quality, page layout, or printing matters.

Quality and compatibility limits

Pixel dimensions determine legibility. Export at the largest practical width and height, then inspect text, hatch patterns, dimension arrows, and thin lines at 100% size. A JPEG made from a small viewport will become unreadable when enlarged.

A JPEG contains no CAD layers, blocks, object snaps, units, coordinates, selectable text, or reliable drawing scale. It represents only the selected view, so a 3D DXF becomes one 2D image from the chosen viewing angle. Keep the original DXF for editing, fabrication, accurate measurement, and future exports.

Missing SHX or TrueType fonts, unsupported proxy objects, unloaded external references, hidden layers, and incorrect drawing extents can alter the image. JPEG also has no transparency and is unsuitable for repeated editing and re-saving because each lossy save can reduce quality. Use PNG for crisp monochrome linework when the receiving application accepts it, or export a PDF when the workflow requires vector lines, page dimensions, or printing.
