How to convert dxf to igs file

Some older CAD, CAM, CNC, tooling, and inspection systems accept IGES but do not import DXF reliably. Converting the drawing supplies those systems with a neutral .igs or .iges file for geometry exchange.

What the DXF format is

DXF, or Drawing Exchange Format, is an Autodesk-developed CAD exchange format used by drafting and engineering software. It can store lines, polylines, arcs, circles, splines, text, dimensions, hatches, layers, blocks, and—depending on the version and application—3D faces, meshes, and solid-related entities.

AutoCAD, BricsCAD, DraftSight, LibreCAD, and FreeCAD can create or open DXF files. DXF is used for architectural plans, mechanical drawings, surveying, CNC preparation, laser cutting, and transfers between CAD systems. A 2D DXF contains drawing geometry, not a 3D solid; opening it in a 3D CAD application does not create missing depth or surfaces.

What the IGS format is

IGS is the filename extension commonly used for IGES, the Initial Graphics Exchange Specification. IGES is an ASCII neutral CAD format that represents curves, wireframe entities, surfaces, and some solid-related entities as parameterized geometric records.

IGES can transfer lines, arcs, circles, splines, trimmed surfaces, and other engineering geometry without requiring the receiving application to use the source program's native format. It is older than STEP and generally preserves less design history, feature information, and product structure. IGES files can also be larger than equivalent native or modern neutral CAD files.

How to convert DXF to IGS

For a simple file, use the converter on 101convert.com: upload the .dxf file, choose IGS or IGES as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting .igs file. This route requires no installed CAD software and is suitable when the DXF contains supported linework or curves.

For local processing, FreeCAD provides a practical desktop workflow:

  1. Open the DXF with File → Open. If prompted, choose the DXF import method or enable the DXF importer in the application settings.
  2. Inspect the imported geometry in the 3D view. Remove construction geometry, text, dimensions, and hatches if the destination needs only manufacturing or modeling geometry.
  3. Check the document's units and scale. If the importer creates separate edges or wires, convert or group them into a Part shape when required by the exporter.
  4. Select the required geometry and use File → Export. Choose an IGES output type such as IGES (*.igs; *.iges), then save the file.
  5. Open the exported file in the destination CAD system and verify scale, geometry, and closed profiles.

FreeCAD's result depends on how its DXF importer represents each entity. A commercial CAD system with native DXF and IGES translators is preferable for 3D faces, trimmed surfaces, or solids. Its equivalent workflow is File → Import or File → Open, geometry repair or conversion, followed by File → Export with an IGES entity and unit setting supported by the destination system.

Quality and compatibility limits

  • 2D remains 2D. Exporting lines and arcs to IGES produces wireframe curves, not an extruded solid, surface, or watertight model.
  • Text, dimensions, hatches, blocks, layers, and annotations may be omitted, exploded into geometry, or imported as non-editable objects. Confirm which entities the receiving application requires.
  • DXF unit metadata is not always populated or interpreted consistently. Set the source and export units explicitly; a unit mismatch can change the apparent scale.
  • Duplicate edges, disconnected endpoints, self-intersections, open polylines, and small gaps can prevent the destination application from creating closed profiles or surfaces. Join and repair geometry before export.
  • IGES translators differ in their support for entity types. A destination may accept curves but reject a particular surface or solid representation; export simpler curves or surfaces when necessary.
  • IGES does not normally preserve DXF layer organization, annotation behavior, blocks, parametric history, or feature relationships. Keep the original DXF and compare dimensions, scale, curve closure, and important geometry after conversion.
