Free online 3MF to IGS converter

A 3MF model may need conversion when a CAD, inspection, or manufacturing application accepts IGES but cannot open 3MF. The conversion changes a polygon mesh into an IGES-compatible geometric representation, so the result is usually an approximation rather than the original parametric CAD model.

What the 3MF format is

3MF is a ZIP-based 3D-printing container that stores one or more polygon meshes together with units, object relationships, colors, materials, textures, and print metadata. Its main geometry consists of vertices and triangular faces, not editable CAD surfaces or feature history.

CAD and modeling applications can export 3MF, while slicers such as PrusaSlicer, OrcaSlicer, and UltiMaker Cura use it for multi-part print projects. Microsoft 3D Builder, Autodesk Fusion, SolidWorks, Blender with suitable extensions, and many mesh-processing tools can also create or open 3MF files. You commonly encounter the format when downloading a 3D-printable model or receiving a print project containing multiple objects.

What the IGS format is

IGS, normally using the .igs or .iges extension, is the file format defined by the Initial Graphics Exchange Specification. It is used to exchange CAD geometry between mechanical-design, CAM, tooling, inspection, and older engineering systems.

IGES can represent wireframes, curves, trimmed surfaces, and some solid-related entities. Its surface-based representation is useful when the receiving application does not support the sender's native CAD format. Unlike 3MF, an IGS file does not normally carry 3D-printing metadata, slicer settings, assembly relationships, or the original model's parametric features.

How to actually convert 3MF to IGS

For a desktop conversion, FreeCAD is a practical option when the 3MF contains a manageable mesh:

1. Install FreeCAD and open the 3MF file with File → Open. If the file contains several objects, identify which mesh objects must be exported.
2. Switch to the Mesh workbench and inspect the model for holes, inverted faces, self-intersections, and excessive polygon density. Repair the mesh with the available mesh-cleanup commands if necessary.
3. Select the mesh and switch to the Part workbench. Use Part → Create shape from mesh. Set the tolerance appropriate to the model's units; a smaller tolerance preserves more detail but can make processing slower and produce a larger, less compatible result.
4. Select the generated shape and use Part → Convert to solid if the mesh represents a closed watertight object. This step may fail when the mesh has open boundaries, internal shells, duplicate faces, or non-manifold edges.
5. Select the resulting shape and choose File → Export. Set the output filename to model.igs or select IGES in the file-type list.
6. Open the exported file in the target CAD application and verify scale, orientation, surface continuity, and the number of objects.

Quality and compatibility limitations

A 3MF mesh contains only tessellated geometry. Converting it to IGS cannot recover the original sketches, fillets, constraints, B-spline surfaces, or feature tree. The exported IGES geometry is generally made from planar or faceted entities, or from fitted surfaces that approximate the triangles; it is not equivalent to exporting a native CAD solid.

Watertight geometry is the main requirement for creating a usable solid. Open edges, flipped normals, overlapping triangles, zero-area faces, and non-manifold regions can cause shape creation or IGES export to fail. Repair the mesh before conversion rather than relying on the IGES exporter to correct topology.

Confirm the unit system before export. 3MF stores unit information, but some mesh tools interpret missing or ambiguous units as millimeters, while IGES readers may apply their own unit settings. Measure a known feature after import; a millimeter-to-inch mismatch changes dimensions by a factor of 25.4.

Colors, textures, slicer settings, print plates, supports, and material assignments may be discarded. If the 3MF contains multiple separate objects, export them individually when the receiving CAD or CAM system expects one part per file.
