Free online GLB to IGS converter

Many engineering and CAD applications require IGES/IGS rather than the GLB format used by web viewers and 3D tools. The conversion is therefore useful when a GLB model must be opened in legacy CAD software, exchanged with a manufacturer, or included in an IGES-based workflow.

What the GLB format is

GLB is the binary container form of glTF, a real-time 3D format maintained by the Khronos Group. A GLB file can contain polygon geometry, materials, textures, animations, cameras, and scene hierarchy in one file.

Blender, 3ds Max, Maya, SketchUp, game engines, product-visualization systems, and web-based 3D applications commonly create or export GLB files. You also encounter GLB when downloading models for WebGL viewers, augmented reality, digital twins, or interactive product configurators.

GLB describes models primarily as triangle meshes. It does not normally contain the parametric history, constraints, exact analytic surfaces, or solid-body data expected by mechanical CAD systems.

What the IGS format is

IGS, usually written as .igs or .iges, is the file extension for the Initial Graphics Exchange Specification. It is an older CAD exchange format used to transfer curves, wireframes, surfaces, and some solid-related data between systems from different vendors.

IGES is useful when a recipient uses older or specialized CAD software that cannot import modern mesh formats. It is also accepted by many CNC, inspection, tooling, and manufacturing workflows. Its text-based structure makes it relatively portable and inspectable, although files can be large.

IGES does not preserve GLB features such as PBR materials, texture images, animation, cameras, scene metadata, or interactive behavior. A conversion normally produces faceted geometry or approximated CAD surfaces rather than the original design intent.

How to actually convert GLB to IGS

Using a desktop CAD converter

A dedicated translator such as CAD Exchanger Desktop is the most practical option when the output must be usable in a CAD or manufacturing system. It supports common mesh input formats and CAD export formats, but available export options depend on the installed edition and source geometry.

1. Open CAD Exchanger Desktop and choose File → Open.
2. Select the .glb file and allow the program to load its scene and mesh data.
3. Inspect the model orientation, scale, visible parts, and units. GLB files often lack reliable real-world units, so verify dimensions before export.
4. Choose File → Save As or File → Export, select IGES (*.igs, *.iges), and choose the available surface or mesh representation.
5. Set the required tolerance if the exporter provides one. A smaller tolerance can improve geometric approximation but may create more surfaces and a larger file.
6. Save the file, then open the resulting IGS file in the target CAD application and run its geometry or stitching check.

Menu names differ between CAD Exchanger versions. If IGS is not listed as an output format, that installation or license cannot perform this conversion directly.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

• Mesh-to-CAD conversion is approximate. A GLB triangle mesh does not provide the exact NURBS or parametric surfaces that an IGES model may contain.
• Flat-shaded or low-resolution source meshes can produce visibly faceted IGES geometry. Increasing mesh density before conversion may improve appearance but cannot recreate missing design accuracy.
• Textures and physically based materials are discarded. IGES generally transfers geometry, not the visual appearance stored in a GLB.
• Assembly hierarchy, object names, animations, cameras, and metadata may be lost or simplified.
• Check the model's scale after import. GLB commonly uses meters in real-time workflows, while a receiving CAD system may interpret IGES coordinates as millimeters or inches.
• For machining, tooling, or dimensional inspection, do not treat the converted file as manufacturing-grade evidence without comparing dimensions against the original design or rebuilding critical surfaces in a native CAD system.
