What the IGES format is

IGES, usually stored with an .igs or .iges extension, is an older neutral CAD exchange format. It can represent wireframe entities, curves, trimmed surfaces, and some solid-related geometry used by CAD, CAM, inspection, and manufacturing systems.

IGES is useful when the receiving system has no compatible native format or requires an established interchange format. Its surface and curve entities can be edited in many CAD programs, but IGES does not preserve the GLB scene structure, PBR materials, textures, animation, or web-viewer metadata.

How to actually convert GLB to IGES

Quality and compatibility limitations

  • GLB is usually mesh-only. A conversion cannot recover sketches, constraints, feature trees, exact cylinders, planes, or manufacturing tolerances unless the source contains sufficient geometry to reconstruct them.
  • Surface quality depends on triangle density. A low-polygon GLB produces visibly faceted or inaccurate IGES surfaces; a dense scan can produce an excessively large file with thousands of small faces.
  • MeshToNURB is not reverse engineering. It commonly creates one NURBS surface per triangle, which may satisfy an IGES import requirement but is difficult to edit and unsuitable for clean downstream machining.
  • Scale is not guaranteed. GLB files may omit reliable unit metadata. Measure a known dimension after import and apply a scale correction before exporting.
  • Textures and materials are lost. IGES generally carries geometry, not the GLB appearance data. Keep the original GLB when visual rendering or color information is required.
  • Check the destination version. Some older CAD systems accept only particular IGES entity types, such as trimmed parametric surfaces, and may reject mesh-derived or unsupported entities.
