What the GLB format is

GLB is the binary form of glTF, a 3D delivery format designed for efficient viewing and web or real-time applications. It normally stores triangle meshes, vertex normals, UV coordinates, materials, textures, and sometimes cameras, lights, and animation in one file.

Blender, Autodesk 3ds Max, Autodesk Maya, SketchUp, game engines, CAD viewers, and many 3D scanning or visualization tools can create or export GLB files. You commonly encounter GLB models in browser-based viewers, augmented-reality assets, product configurators, game projects, and exports from applications that prioritize appearance over engineering history.

What the IGES format is

IGES, usually stored with an .igs or .iges extension, is an older neutral CAD exchange format. It can represent wireframe entities, curves, trimmed surfaces, and some solid-related geometry used by CAD, CAM, inspection, and manufacturing systems.

IGES is useful when the receiving system has no compatible native format or requires an established interchange format. Its surface and curve entities can be edited in many CAD programs, but IGES does not preserve the GLB scene structure, PBR materials, textures, animation, or web-viewer metadata.

How to actually convert GLB to IGES

For a quick file conversion:

1. Open the GLB conversion page on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the .glb file and choose IGES as the output format.
3. Start the conversion, then download the resulting .igs or .iges file when processing finishes.
4. Open the result in the target CAD application and inspect the scale, orientation, surface continuity, and missing parts before using it for engineering work.

This route requires no installed software, but it is appropriate mainly for visualization or basic exchange. A generic converter may pass the mesh into IGES as faceted geometry rather than produce clean analytic CAD surfaces.

For controlled CAD cleanup, use Rhino:

1. In Rhino, choose File → Import and select the GLB file. Confirm the import units and scale.
2. Inspect the imported object with Analyze → Edge Tools → Show Edges and repair obvious holes or invalid areas before conversion.
3. If the receiving system accepts faceted geometry, select the mesh and choose File → Export Selected, then select IGES. If it requires surfaces, first use MeshToNURB or rebuild the model with QuadRemesh followed by ToNURBS.
4. In the IGES export options, select the surface or NURBS entity types supported by the destination CAD program, save as .igs or .iges, and reopen the file to verify it.

For engineering exchange, use a CAD translator such as CAD Exchanger: import the GLB, inspect the detected mesh, apply the available mesh-to-surface or B-rep conversion, and use File → Export to select IGES. Export settings and mesh-to-B-rep capabilities vary by edition, so verify that the output contains surfaces rather than only display triangles.

Quality and compatibility limitations

• GLB is usually mesh-only. A conversion cannot recover sketches, constraints, feature trees, exact cylinders, planes, or manufacturing tolerances unless the source contains sufficient geometry to reconstruct them.
• Surface quality depends on triangle density. A low-polygon GLB produces visibly faceted or inaccurate IGES surfaces; a dense scan can produce an excessively large file with thousands of small faces.
• MeshToNURB is not reverse engineering. It commonly creates one NURBS surface per triangle, which may satisfy an IGES import requirement but is difficult to edit and unsuitable for clean downstream machining.
• Scale is not guaranteed. GLB files may omit reliable unit metadata. Measure a known dimension after import and apply a scale correction before exporting.
• Textures and materials are lost. IGES generally carries geometry, not the GLB appearance data. Keep the original GLB when visual rendering or color information is required.
• Check the destination version. Some older CAD systems accept only particular IGES entity types, such as trimmed parametric surfaces, and may reject mesh-derived or unsupported entities.
