FCSTD is appropriate when the model must be edited in FreeCAD, measured with CAD tools, combined with other parts, or retained with its feature structure. Saving imported geometry as FCSTD does not automatically create sketches, constraints, or a parametric feature history.
How to actually convert GLB to FCSTD
Desktop workflow with Blender and FreeCAD
- Install Blender and FreeCAD, then open Blender.
- Choose File → Import → glTF 2.0 (.glb/.gltf) and select
model.glb. - Inspect the imported scene. Delete cameras, lights, and decorative objects if only the part geometry is required.
- Select the required mesh objects and choose File → Export → Wavefront (.obj) or File → Export → STL. OBJ can preserve separate objects; STL is usually simpler for a single watertight mesh.
- Open FreeCAD and choose File → Open or File → Import to load the exported OBJ or STL.
- Switch to the Part workbench. Select the imported mesh and use Part → Create shape from mesh. Set a tolerance appropriate to the model scale; an excessively large tolerance can alter small features.
- If the resulting shape is a closed shell, use Part → Convert to solid where available. Inspect the result for open edges and invalid faces.
- Save the document with File → Save as and use a filename such as
model.FCStd.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations
The conversion is normally mesh-to-CAD-container, not mesh-to-parametric-CAD. The saved FCSTD may contain a faceted shape or imported mesh, but it will not reproduce the original design history, sketches, dimensions, or editable feature operations.
GLB units are not always explicit. Check the imported dimensions in FreeCAD and correct the scale if the model is too large or too small. GLB materials, textures, animation, cameras, and lights generally do not survive the OBJ/STL-to-FreeCAD workflow.
A solid conversion requires a closed, consistently oriented mesh. Holes, self-intersections, duplicate faces, and non-manifold edges can prevent FreeCAD from creating a valid solid. Use Blender's mesh cleanup tools or FreeCAD's geometry-check tools before converting.
If accurate engineering geometry is available from the source application, request STEP, IGES, or another B-rep CAD export instead of GLB. Those formats preserve surfaces and solids more reliably than a polygon mesh.
