What the FBX format is
FBX is a proprietary Autodesk 3D exchange format used for models, scenes, cameras, lights, materials, skeletal rigs, and animation. Autodesk Maya, 3ds Max, MotionBuilder, Blender, Unity, and Unreal Engine commonly create or consume FBX files. An FBX file may contain several objects, object transforms, textures, animation data, and scene hierarchy rather than a single manufacturing solid.
What the FCSTD format is
FCStd is FreeCAD's native document format. It can store a FreeCAD model tree, sketches, Part and Part Design features, bodies, solids, meshes, view properties, and document metadata. FCStd is useful when the result must be opened and saved in FreeCAD, measured, arranged in a document, or used as input for further CAD operations.
Converting a polygonal FBX model does not normally create editable FreeCAD feature history. The result is usually a mesh object or a solid generated from that mesh. Native sketches, constraints, parametric features, and manufacturing dimensions must be rebuilt separately.
How to actually convert FBX to FCSTD
Recommended desktop method: Blender and FreeCAD
- Install Blender and FreeCAD.
- In Blender, open the FBX with File → Import → FBX (.fbx). Check the imported objects, scale, orientation, modifiers, and scene hierarchy.
- Delete cameras, lights, armatures, and objects that are not needed in FreeCAD. Apply required transforms with Object → Apply → Rotation & Scale.
- Export the geometry. Use File → Export → STL for a single triangulated mesh, or File → Export → Wavefront (.obj) when separate objects and material references need to be retained. STL is usually simpler for FreeCAD.
- In FreeCAD, open the exported
.stlfile with File → Open. FreeCAD loads it as a mesh object. - If a solid is required, switch to the Part workbench, select the mesh, and choose Part → Create shape from mesh. Set an appropriate tolerance; a small value preserves detail but may fail on large or defective meshes, while a larger value can alter edges.
- Select the resulting shape or mesh and save it with File → Save as, using an
.FCStdfilename.
For a quick browser-based attempt, 101convert.com can convert files online without installing software. The Blender–FreeCAD method is preferable when scale, object selection, mesh repair, or solid creation must be checked.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
- Animation is lost: STL and OBJ carry geometry, not FBX skeletal animation, cameras, lights, or animation tracks.
- Materials are limited: STL normally discards textures and materials. OBJ can reference materials through an accompanying
.mtlfile, but FreeCAD does not reproduce a complete game or animation shading setup. - Meshes are not parametric CAD: converting a mesh to a Part shape creates geometry without the original design intent, sketches, constraints, or feature history.
- Solid conversion can fail: holes, self-intersections, duplicate faces, non-manifold edges, and very dense triangulation can prevent FreeCAD from making a valid solid. Repair or decimate the mesh in Blender before importing it.
- Check units and orientation: FBX files may use centimeters, meters, or exporter-specific unit settings. Compare a known dimension after import and correct scale in Blender or FreeCAD before saving.
- Large meshes affect performance: reduce unnecessary subdivisions in Blender; a high-resolution scan or animated asset can make FreeCAD slow even when the conversion succeeds.
