Free online FBX to DWG converter

CAD recipients may require a .dwg file for AutoCAD review, coordination, or placement in a technical drawing when the supplied model is an .fbx asset from a visualization, animation, or game workflow. The conversion transfers static scene geometry into a CAD drawing; it does not make polygonal artwork into native parametric CAD features.

FBX format

FBX is Autodesk's interchange format for 3D scenes and animated assets. It can store polygon meshes, NURBS objects, object hierarchies, materials, texture references, cameras, lights, animation, skeletons, skin weights, and morph targets.

Autodesk 3ds Max and Maya use FBX directly, and applications such as Blender, Cinema 4D, Unity, Unreal Engine, and many visualization tools support FBX import or export. FBX is common in rendering, architectural visualization, game-asset pipelines, virtual production, and 3D asset libraries.

DWG format

DWG is Autodesk AutoCAD's native drawing format. It stores 2D CAD entities including lines, polylines, dimensions, text, hatches, and blocks, as well as 3D meshes, surfaces, and solids.

DWG is useful when the recipient needs to open the file in AutoCAD or compatible CAD software, assign geometry to drawing layers, add annotation, or save a project in a CAD-oriented format. A converted FBX mesh can be stored in DWG, but it remains mesh geometry unless it is remodeled or successfully converted into suitable CAD surfaces or solids.

Convert an FBX file to DWG

Upload the source .fbx file to the converter on 101convert.com, select DWG as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting .dwg file. Open the output in AutoCAD or the recipient's CAD application before delivery to check geometry, orientation, units, and layer organization.

For desktop processing and more control over scene cleanup, Autodesk 3ds Max can be used as an intermediary:

1. Open the FBX file through File → Import → Import.
2. Check the imported scene for unwanted cameras, lights, helpers, hidden objects, and excessively dense meshes.
3. Confirm scale against a known dimension and correct it before export.
4. Use File → Export → Export, choose AutoCAD Drawing (*.DWG), select the required DWG version, and save the file.
5. Open the DWG in AutoCAD, assign objects to required layers, and run AUDIT before issuing the drawing.

Some full AutoCAD releases include the FBXIMPORT command. If it is available in the installed product and version, set drawing units first, run FBXIMPORT, inspect the result, and save the drawing in the recipient's required DWG version. AutoCAD feature availability varies by release and product edition; do not assume that every AutoCAD-based product supports FBX import.

Scale and drawing checks

Set the target drawing's insertion units before import with UNITS or INSUNITS. FBX scenes may be authored in millimeters, centimeters, meters, inches, or application-specific units, and an incorrect unit interpretation can make the model 10, 100, or 1,000 times too large or small.

Use DIST to compare a known reference length after conversion. If the model is not visible, use ZOOM with the E option; geometry may be far from the drawing origin or outside the initial view.

Quality and compatibility limits

DWG has no direct equivalent for FBX animation data. Rigs, skinning, animation takes, morph targets, and game-engine metadata are normally lost; export or import a required static animation frame or pose instead.

Polygon meshes do not become editable AutoCAD extrusions, feature histories, or boundary-representation solids. CONVTOSOLID can work only for appropriate closed, watertight mesh geometry and may fail or create impractically large files on dense models.

Materials and textures may be omitted, simplified, or display differently because FBX and CAD applications use different material systems. If external image files are retained in the DWG workflow, package the drawing and dependencies with ETRANSMIT.

Dense FBX models can create slow DWG files because their triangles become drawable CAD geometry. Delete hidden assets, environment objects, cameras, and unnecessary lights before conversion; reduce mesh density when the recipient needs a manageable reference model. For manufacturing, construction, or dimension-critical editing, remodel essential components as native CAD solids rather than relying on a converted mesh.
