Convert PVZ to DWG

Convert Creo View PVZ packages to lightweight DWG reference models and avoid false native-CAD expectations.

How to convert pvz to dwg file

AutoCAD-based recipients may request a DWG when they cannot open a PTC Creo View package or need a reference model in their drafting system. A PVZ can usually be converted only to a lightweight 3D DWG; it cannot recreate the original Creo drawing or parametric model.

PVZ format and its source

PVZ is PTC Creo View's compressed visualization-package format, previously associated with PTC ProductView. Creo View Publisher, Creo Parametric, Windchill, and related PTC workflows create PVZ files to distribute product structure, visual geometry, views, animations, markups, and selected PMI without sending the original CAD files.

A PVZ commonly contains a .pvs structure file and one or more .ol visualization files. These internal files describe the Creo View representation; they are not the original .prt, .asm, or .drw data. Although a PVZ is package-like and may be inspectable with archive tools, extracting its contents does not provide a reliable route to STEP or DWG conversion.

Published PVZ geometry is normally tessellated for display. It generally lacks editable Creo features, constraints, exact B-rep surfaces, and the associative views and dimensions held in a native Creo drawing.

DWG format and expected output

DWG is Autodesk's native drawing format. AutoCAD, BricsCAD, DraftSight, and many other CAD applications can open or write DWG files containing 2D entities, layouts, text, blocks, mesh objects, and some 3D solid data.

When a PVZ is exported to DWG, the result is normally a faceted 3D mesh or visual representation. It can be useful for coordination, clearance review, reference geometry, and basic viewing in AutoCAD, but it is not a manufacturing-ready drawing and will not become an editable Creo solid.

Convert a PVZ to DWG

  1. Open the package in PTC Creo View Express and confirm that the required assembly or parts are present. Check component visibility, model orientation, and at least one known measurement. If the package is access-controlled or incomplete, obtain an accessible PVZ or the source CAD data from its owner.
  2. Use a desktop translator that explicitly lists both Creo View PVZ import and DWG export. CAD Exchanger Lab is a practical option: use File → Open to load the PVZ, inspect the assembly tree, then select File → Export and choose DWG.
  3. Export only the needed components when possible. Choose mesh or tessellation output if offered, select the required DWG version for the recipient's CAD release, and set or verify output units against the known measurement checked in Creo View.
  4. Open the exported .dwg in AutoCAD, BricsCAD, or DraftSight. Check extents, scale, orientation, missing components, layers, and mesh density. Use Zoom → Extents if the model is not immediately visible.

For occasional, non-confidential files, CAD Exchanger Cloud is a reputable browser-based alternative when its current supported-format list includes the specific PVZ package. Upload a small non-sensitive test file first, verify the DWG result, and do not use public cloud conversion for controlled product geometry unless its security, retention, and contractual terms are acceptable.

When a native drawing is required

If the recipient needs editable 2D views, dimensions, title blocks, tolerances, or accurate section views, request the original Creo drawing and model instead. In Creo Parametric, open the native .drw file and use the product's DWG/DXF export or File → Save As → Save a Copy workflow to create a drawing-based DWG.

Do not use PVZ-derived mesh measurements as contractual or manufacturing dimensions without checking them against the controlled model or drawing. Tessellation can visibly facet curved surfaces, omit metadata, and create large DWG files for complex assemblies. Converting a PVZ through STEP is usually unsuitable because the package normally does not contain the exact solid geometry needed for a valid STEP model.
