Bak to dwg file conversion

BAK files are usually backup copies created by AutoCAD and some other programs. In AutoCAD, a .bak file is often a renamed backup of the most recently saved drawing, and it may contain valid DWG data.

This is not a true conversion. In many cases, you can recover the drawing by making a copy of the backup file and changing the extension from .bak to .dwg. Then open the renamed file in AutoCAD or another DWG-compatible CAD program.

To try this recovery:

  1. Make a copy of the .bak file.
  2. Rename the copy from filename.bak to filename.dwg.
  3. Open the renamed file in AutoCAD or a compatible viewer/editor.

If the file opens, save it as a new .dwg file. If it does not open, the backup may be incomplete, corrupted, or created by another application that uses .bak for a different purpose.

Important: There is usually no reliable third-party tool that can directly convert a generic .bak file to .dwg. The rename method only works when the .bak file actually contains DWG data.

Also note: AutoCAD recovery files such as .sv$ autosave files and .dwl/.dwl2 lock files are different from .bak backups and cannot be renamed to .dwg in the same way.

If you are trying to recover a drawing, check the original project folder for the latest .bak file and any autosave files before assuming the drawing is lost.
