Convert DWT to DWG

A recipient or downstream CAD system may require an editable DWG project drawing instead of a reusable DWT template. The correct process is to create a drawing from the template and save that new drawing as DWG, preserving the original template for later use.

What DWT files contain

DWT is Autodesk AutoCAD’s Drawing Template format. AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT use it to create new drawings with predefined layers, units, text and dimension styles, layouts, title blocks, blocks, plot settings, page setups, and optional starter geometry.

A DWT file uses closely related DWG drawing data, but AutoCAD treats it as a template rather than an ordinary working drawing. Templates are commonly used to apply office CAD standards and sheet setups consistently.

What DWG files provide

DWG is AutoCAD’s native editable drawing format for 2D geometry, 3D objects, annotations, layouts, blocks, external references, and plotting data. A DWG can be edited, shared as a project drawing, attached as an Xref, and saved to an older AutoCAD version when required by the recipient.

Changing a template into a DWG does not normally reduce file size or improve drawing quality. It changes the file’s intended use: the result becomes a project drawing that can be edited without modifying the office template.

Create a DWG from a DWT in AutoCAD

AutoCAD or AutoCAD LT is the preferred method because it preserves AutoCAD-specific objects, layouts, styles, and drawing-version options.

1. Start AutoCAD or AutoCAD LT.
2. Select File → New and choose the source template, for example office-standard.dwt.
3. Check the layers, units, layouts, title block, page setups, and starter content before adding project work.
4. Select File → Save As, or run SAVEAS.
5. Enter a new filename such as project-001.dwg.
6. Select the DWG version requested by the recipient, then save the file.

Do not overwrite office-standard.dwt when saving. A separate DWG retains the template as the source for future drawings.

Other conversion options

For batch version conversion or users without a full AutoCAD installation, test a desktop CAD application that explicitly supports opening DWT files and saving DWG files. Check the saved output in AutoCAD or the target CAD application before using it for production work; third-party applications can substitute unsupported objects, fonts, or custom AutoCAD features.

CloudConvert and Zamzar may offer DWT-to-DWG conversion when their current format lists accept the source file. Use online services only for non-confidential templates, download the result, and inspect it before distribution. A browser converter cannot include local dependencies such as Xrefs, plot styles, custom fonts, or raster files unless those resources are separately supplied.

Compatibility checks

A template can reference external drawings, images, fonts, plot style tables, and other support files. Saving it as DWG does not embed or repair those dependencies. Check unresolved references in External References, and use File → eTransmit to package the DWG with Xrefs, images, fonts where permitted, and plot-related files for transfer.

Missing SHX or TrueType fonts can cause substitutions that change text appearance, spacing, and plotted output. Saving to an older DWG release can convert newer objects to proxy objects or reduce feature support; inspect layouts, annotation scales, dynamic blocks, 3D objects, and plot previews in the recipient’s software.
