Convert PLA to DWG

Architects commonly need this conversion when a consultant or AutoCAD user requests editable CAD drawings instead of an Archicad project archive. Exporting selected plans, sections, elevations, details, or layouts to DWG makes the information usable in other CAD applications.

What the PLA format is

.pla is a Graphisoft Archicad archive. It packages an Archicad project with project data and, when included in the archive, embedded library parts, objects, textures, and other resources so the project can be transferred or restored on another Archicad installation.

PLA files are used for project handover, archiving, office-to-office transfer, and migration between computers. PLA is not a general CAD interchange format; AutoCAD, DraftSight, and most online conversion services cannot interpret it directly.

What the DWG format is

.dwg is Autodesk's native CAD drawing format, supported by AutoCAD, BricsCAD, DraftSight, and many specialist CAD applications. Depending on the export and translator settings, it can contain editable 2D entities, some 3D geometry, layers, blocks, text, dimensions, line types, and metadata.

DWG is suitable for delivering floor plans, elevations, sections, details, and other CAD drawings outside Archicad. It does not preserve Archicad's complete BIM model, parametric behavior, element relationships, library objects, or project database.

How to convert a PLA file to DWG

1. Install a compatible Graphisoft Archicad version. A newer version can generally open an archive from an older version, but an older version cannot normally open a PLA created by a newer version. Use the original or a newer major version when possible.
2. In Archicad, choose File → Open and select the .pla file. Let Archicad extract the archive. Check for missing external libraries, linked files, fonts, and textures; not every externally referenced resource is necessarily stored in the PLA.
3. Open the required floor plan, section, elevation, detail, worksheet, layout, or 3D document. Exporting the active view exports that view, not the entire Archicad project.
4. Choose File → Interoperability → DXF-DWG → Save As, select DWG, and choose an Archicad DWG translator. In some Archicad versions, the equivalent command is named Save as DWG or appears under the DXF-DWG interoperability commands.
5. Review the translator settings for layer mapping, drawing units, pen conversion, fonts, fills, line types, blocks, model space, paper space, and whether Archicad elements should export as lines, blocks, or other entities.
6. Save the DWG and inspect it in AutoCAD, BricsCAD, DraftSight, or a current DWG viewer. Verify scale with a known dimension and check layers, text, line weights, dimensions, clipping, and missing references.

For multiple drawings, place the required views and layouts in an Archicad Publisher set, set the output format to DWG, select the translator, and publish the set. Test one representative drawing before publishing a full documentation package.

Quality and compatibility limits

DWG export is view-based. A plan, section, elevation, layout, or 3D view produces the geometry and annotations visible in that output. A 3D export is not an equivalent editable BIM model; complex Archicad elements may become blocks, meshes, proxy-like objects, or flattened linework.

Translator settings affect the result substantially. Graphic overrides, composites, fills, markers, associative dimensions, renovation filters, and other Archicad-specific features may be simplified or converted to ordinary DWG entities. Font substitution can alter text wrapping and placement. Confirm units and measure the exported file against a known project dimension.

There is no generally reliable online PLA-to-DWG service because the archive requires Archicad to interpret its project structure and libraries. Services such as CloudConvert and Zamzar may handle many DWG conversions but do not provide a dependable direct PLA workflow. If Archicad is unavailable, request a DWG export from the project author; a PDF can preserve the appearance of a drawing but normally will not provide equivalent editable CAD geometry.
