Free online CDR to DWG converter

A CAD application may require DWG when CorelDRAW artwork must be dimensioned, edited as technical geometry, or shared with an AutoCAD-based workflow. Converting the file can preserve vector paths, but it does not turn artistic effects or raster images into native CAD objects.

What the CDR format is

CDR is the native document format of CorelDRAW and related Corel graphics applications. It is used for logos, signs, illustrations, page layouts, cutting templates, and technical artwork by designers, printers, sign manufacturers, and cutting-service providers.

A CDR document can contain vector curves, text, fills, outlines, layers, bitmap images, transparency, gradients, clipping masks, shadows, and other effects. Its page size and measurement units describe a graphics document; they do not necessarily represent correctly scaled real-world CAD dimensions.

What the DWG format is

DWG is a CAD drawing format associated with AutoCAD and supported by applications such as BricsCAD, DraftSight, and ZWCAD. It can store 2D or 3D geometry, including lines, arcs, circles, polylines, splines, blocks, layers, text, line types, and dimensions.

DWG is appropriate when the recipient needs coordinate-based editing, measurement, layering, plotting, engineering coordination, or manufacturing preparation in CAD software. It is not a full replacement for CDR: page composition, bitmap images, transparency, shadows, artistic brushes, and many CorelDRAW effects have no direct DWG equivalent.

Convert CDR to DWG online

1. Open the CDR-to-DWG converter on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the .cdr file and choose DWG as the output format.
3. Start the conversion and download the resulting .dwg file.
4. Open the output in AutoCAD, BricsCAD, DraftSight, or another DWG-compatible CAD application.
5. Check the units, overall dimensions, curves, layers, text, closed profiles, and object placement before using the file for fabrication or engineering.

This method requires no installed software. It is most suitable for CDR files containing ordinary vector paths. Complex effects, embedded images, unsupported text, and unusual CDR objects may be omitted, simplified, or converted into less editable geometry.

Convert with CorelDRAW and CAD software

1. Open the original file in CorelDRAW and save a backup copy.
2. Review the document or page units and dimensions in the document properties. Establish whether the receiving CAD system expects millimeters, inches, or another unit.
3. Remove or simplify bitmap images, shadows, transparency, blends, brush effects, and other objects that are not required in the CAD drawing.
4. Keep text as text only when the recipient needs editable CAD text and the required fonts are available. Otherwise, select the text and use Object → Convert to Curves. This avoids font substitution but removes text search, normal text editing, and semantic text data.
5. Use File → Export and select DXF if that format is available. Choose the appropriate DXF or AutoCAD release, units, scale, and curve or polyline settings. CorelDRAW commonly provides DXF export rather than native DWG export.
6. Open the exported .dxf in AutoCAD, BricsCAD, DraftSight, or another CAD editor. Inspect the geometry and assign layers, colors, and line types as needed.
7. Measure a known feature and correct the scale if necessary. Then use File → Save As and select the DWG version required by the recipient.

Some CorelDRAW editions or third-party plug-ins may expose direct DWG export. Use it only when the option is actually available, and perform the same unit, geometry, and scale checks. Renaming .cdr to .dwg does not convert the file.

Quality and compatibility checks

• Verify scale. A CDR object measuring 100 mm is not guaranteed to import as 100 CAD units. Compare a known dimension and apply a controlled scale correction using a reference length if required.
• Inspect curve representation. Smooth CDR curves may become CAD splines, polylines, or many short line segments. Polyline approximation can enlarge the file and alter smoothness; spline support differs between CAD applications.
• Clean manufacturing profiles. Join fragmented paths, remove duplicate segments, check for self-intersections, and confirm that cutting boundaries are closed before sending the DWG to a CNC, laser, plasma, or waterjet workflow.
• Expect appearance loss. Fills may become boundaries, while gradients, transparency, shadows, clipping effects, and artistic strokes may disappear or reduce to basic geometry. Raster images remain raster data or may be omitted; conversion cannot create editable CAD vectors from pixels.
• Review text. Missing fonts can change text appearance or placement. Curved text avoids substitution but produces geometry that is no longer ordinary editable text.
• Recreate engineering data. CorelDRAW dimensions, labels, and artistic outlines generally do not become associative CAD dimensions or equivalent engineering objects. Recreate required dimensions in the CAD application.
• Check layers and versions. CDR groups, layers, and effects do not map consistently to DWG layers or blocks. Save the final file in the DWG release requested by the recipient because newer releases may not open in older CAD software.
