What the OFF format is
OFF, commonly meaning Object File Format, stores polygonal 3D geometry as vertices, faces, and optionally face colors or other attributes. It is used in computational geometry, 3D scanning, mesh research, and model-processing applications.
OFF files are commonly created or exported by tools such as Geomview, MeshLab, CGAL-based programs, and custom geometry software. You may encounter them when downloading a research model or exporting a polygon mesh from a geometry-processing workflow. OFF is not a CAD solid format: it normally contains faceted surface data rather than parametric solids, layers, dimensions, blocks, or drafting metadata.
What the DWG format is
DWG is a proprietary CAD drawing format associated with AutoCAD and supported by many engineering, architecture, surveying, and manufacturing applications. It can contain 2D entities, 3D faces, meshes, solids, text, dimensions, layers, blocks, and other drawing database objects.
DWG is suitable when the recipient needs to edit the result in AutoCAD-compatible software, combine it with existing drawings, apply CAD layers and coordinates, or preserve a drawing in a standard engineering workflow. Saving a polygon mesh as DWG does not automatically turn it into an editable parametric solid.
How to actually convert OFF to DWG
The most reliable desktop workflow is to convert the OFF mesh to an intermediate format, import it into a CAD application, and then save or export DWG.
- Open the OFF file in MeshLab using File → Import Mesh.
- Check the mesh for inverted faces, duplicate vertices, holes, and excessive polygon counts. Use MeshLab cleanup filters if the model is damaged or too large.
- Export the cleaned mesh as
STLorOBJwith File → Export Mesh As. STL is usually sufficient for faceted geometry; OBJ is preferable when color or texture information matters, although most DWG workflows will discard those attributes. - Import the intermediate file into FreeCAD with File → Import. Use the Mesh workbench to inspect scale and orientation.
- If a CAD surface or solid is required, select the mesh and use the Part workbench's mesh-to-shape tools. A watertight, reasonably clean mesh is required for conversion to a solid; a highly detailed scan may exceed practical CAD tolerances.
- Export CAD-compatible geometry as
DXFwhere supported, using File → Export. FreeCAD versions and workbenches differ in their DWG support, so DXF is commonly used as the interchange stage. - Open the DXF in a DWG-capable application, such as AutoCAD or a compatible CAD program, and save it with File → Save As in the required DWG version. If your CAD application cannot write DWG, use a desktop DWG/DXF conversion utility that supports the required release.

Quality and compatibility limitations
OFF-to-DWG conversion is usually a mesh-to-CAD translation, not a direct format rewrite. Polygon faces may become 3D face entities or a faceted surface, and the output may contain no editable sketches, dimensions, layers, or parametric features.
Verify units because OFF files often lack explicit unit metadata. Check the model's bounding dimensions after import and apply a scale factor if the source was interpreted in millimetres, centimetres, or metres incorrectly.
Large or non-manifold meshes can produce oversized DWG files, failed solid creation, missing faces, or slow CAD performance. Preserve the original OFF file and compare the converted DWG at several viewpoints; do not rely on visual similarity alone for dimensional work.
Color, textures, vertex normals, and research-specific attributes generally do not survive the conversion. If the target is a 2D drawing rather than a 3D mesh, generate orthographic sections or projected outlines in CAD and export those separately as DWG.
