What the DWL format is

In CAD software, .dwl is an AutoCAD drawing lock file. AutoCAD commonly creates a .dwl file and, depending on the version, a related .dwl2 file beside an open .dwg drawing. AutoCAD and some compatible CAD applications use these files to record session or user information and indicate that the drawing is being edited.

A DWL file does not contain the drawing database. It has no model geometry, layers, blocks, dimensions, layouts, annotation, or other editable CAD entities. The files are normally removed when the drawing closes correctly, but they can remain after a crash, lost network connection, or forced shutdown. AutoCAD users, CAD administrators, and users of compatible applications such as BricsCAD may encounter them.

What the DWG format is

.dwg is the native drawing format associated with AutoCAD and is supported by many other CAD systems. It stores editable 2D and 3D geometry, layers, blocks, annotation, styles, viewports, layouts, coordinate information, and drawing metadata.

DWG is the appropriate format when the recipient must continue editing, measuring, plotting, or coordinating the design in AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, BricsCAD, DraftSight, or another compatible application. DWG releases are not fully interchangeable: an older application may require an older DWG version, and saving newer objects to an older version can alter or discard unsupported features.

How to obtain the DWG

1. Inspect the DWL file’s folder for a file with the same base name and a .dwg extension, such as FloorPlan.dwl beside FloorPlan.dwg. Also check network shares, external drives, synchronized project folders, backups, and locations where the operating system hides filename extensions.
2. Determine whether another user or CAD process still has the drawing open. Ask the user to close it normally. Do not remove lock files while the drawing is open, because another user could then edit the same DWG and overwrite changes.
3. If the application crashed, confirm that no AutoCAD or compatible CAD process is using the file. Back up the folder, then remove only stale .dwl and .dwl2 files. This clears a lock indicator; it does not convert or repair the drawing.
4. Open the associated DWG in AutoCAD or another compatible desktop CAD application. To create a version for a different application, use File → Save As, select the required DWG release, and save a separate copy.
5. If the matching DWG is missing, request it from the author or administrator and search for a backup such as name.bak, an autosave file such as name.sv$, or an earlier project revision. Copy a candidate before changing its extension or opening it; a copied .bak or .sv$ file may be usable after being renamed to .dwg.

Why a DWL converter cannot produce DWG

There is no genuine DWL-to-DWG conversion. Renaming drawing.dwl to drawing.dwg changes only the filename extension and produces an invalid or empty drawing because the source contains no CAD geometry. AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, BricsCAD, and DraftSight can convert or resave an actual drawing, but none can extract entities that were never stored in the DWL file.

You can use the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software when the source is an actual supported CAD file, such as DWG or DXF. Submitting a lock file cannot reconstruct a missing drawing and may simply produce an unsupported-file error.

Recovery and compatibility limits

If the DWG exists but reports damage, make a backup and use AutoCAD’s File → Drawing Utilities → Recover command, or run RECOVER. If only a DXF export is available, it may preserve much of the vector geometry but can omit DWG-specific objects, constraints, layouts, styles, proxy data, and metadata.

After opening a recovered or resaved drawing, check external-reference paths, raster images, fonts, plot styles, units, layers, layouts, proxy objects, and plotted output. These resources may be stored outside the DWG or depend on application-specific features, so a file that opens successfully may still require cleanup before distribution.
