Convert DWL to DWG

A CAD program or colleague may require an editable .dwg drawing, while a project folder contains only a .dwl file. The required action is usually to locate or recover the original DWG, because a DWL lock file cannot be converted into drawing data.

What the DWL format is

AutoCAD creates a .dwl file beside an open drawing to indicate that the drawing is in use. Some AutoCAD versions also create a related .dwl2 file. These files contain lock or session information, such as the user or workstation associated with the open drawing; they do not contain lines, layers, blocks, dimensions, layouts, or other CAD entities.

DWL files are associated primarily with AutoCAD and can also appear in compatible CAD applications, including some BricsCAD workflows. They are normally temporary and are removed when the drawing closes correctly. A DWL file may remain after a crash or an interrupted network session.

What the DWG format is

.dwg is the native drawing format used by AutoCAD and supported by many compatible CAD systems. It stores editable 2D and 3D geometry, layers, blocks, annotation, styles, layouts, and drawing metadata.

Use the DWG when the recipient needs to edit the design in AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, BricsCAD, DraftSight, or another compatible application. DWG compatibility depends on the file version; AutoCAD can create an older-version copy through File → Save As, but some newer objects may be altered or excluded when saved to an older format.

How to obtain the DWG

1. Inspect the same folder for a file with the same base name and a .dwg extension. For example, FloorPlan.dwl normally accompanies FloorPlan.dwg. Check network locations, external drives, cloud-synchronization folders, and file extensions hidden by the operating system.
2. If another user has the drawing open, ask that user to close it normally. Do not delete the lock files while the drawing is open; removing them can permit conflicting edits and lead to overwritten changes.
3. If the application crashed, confirm that no AutoCAD or compatible CAD process is still using the drawing. Back up the folder first, then delete only stale .dwl and .dwl2 files. This removes a lock indicator; it does not convert, repair, or recover a DWG.
4. Open the original DWG in AutoCAD or another compatible desktop CAD application. To supply a different DWG version, use File → Save As, choose the required drawing format, and save a new copy rather than overwriting the source.
5. If the DWG is missing, request the original from the author or administrator. Also search for an AutoCAD backup file such as name.bak or an autosave file such as name.sv$. Preserve the originals, identify the correct backup by date and size, and copy it before renaming or opening it. A damaged DWG can be tested with AutoCAD’s RECOVER command after making a backup.

Converters and recovery limits

No converter can reconstruct a drawing from a DWL file. Renaming drawing.dwl to drawing.dwg changes only the filename extension and produces an invalid or unusable drawing. Desktop applications such as AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, BricsCAD, and DraftSight can work with the actual DWG, but none can extract geometry that the DWL never contained.

Online services such as CloudConvert or Convertio may convert an existing DWG to another supported format, but they do not convert AutoCAD lock files into DWG. Uploading a DWL normally returns an unsupported-file error or an unusable output. Online conversion also exposes the uploaded drawing to a third party and may discard proxy objects, custom fonts, external references, constraints, or application-specific features, so use a desktop CAD application for confidential or complex files.

Compatibility and quality caveats

If only the DWL remains, recovery requires the original DWG, a valid backup, an autosave file, or an export such as DXF from the author’s system. A DXF can preserve much of the geometry but may not preserve all DWG-specific objects, layouts, styles, constraints, or metadata.

External references, raster images, fonts, plot styles, and custom object enablers may be stored separately from the DWG. After opening a recovered or converted drawing, check reference paths, missing fonts, proxy objects, units, layers, layouts, and plotted output before distributing it.
