Free online DAE to DWG converter

A DAE model may need to be delivered as DWG when an AutoCAD-based project, CAD reviewer, or drawing archive requires Autodesk’s drawing format. The conversion usually transfers 3D mesh geometry, not editable parametric CAD features.

What the DAE format contains

DAE is the extension for COLLADA Digital Asset Exchange files. COLLADA stores 3D scene data as XML, including polygon meshes, object hierarchy, materials, texture references, cameras, lights, and sometimes animation.

DAE is used for exchanging models between 3D modeling, visualization, game-asset, and SketchUp-based workflows. Its geometry is usually a polygon mesh, often made of triangles, rather than a CAD solid with dimensions, constraints, feature history, or tolerances.

A DAE file can reference external images such as texture.jpg or material.png. Keep those files with the source model when importing it into desktop software; otherwise, textures may be missing even if the geometry opens correctly.

What the DWG format provides

DWG is Autodesk’s native drawing format and is used by AutoCAD and many compatible CAD applications, including BricsCAD and DraftSight. A DWG can contain layers, blocks, 2D lines and dimensions, layouts, text, 3D solids, surfaces, and meshes.

When converted from DAE, the result is normally a 3D mesh or polyface mesh. It can be positioned, scaled, sectioned, measured, and edited at the mesh level, but it will not reliably become native extrusions, holes, fillets, or dimension-driven solid features.

Convert the file

To create a DWG without installing software, upload the .dae file to 101convert.com, select DWG as the output format, start the conversion, and download the generated file. Treat the output primarily as geometry; texture images, lighting, animation, cameras, and scene effects do not have consistent DWG equivalents.

1. Choose File → Import, select COLLADA File (*.dae), and open the model.
2. Check for missing faces, inverted face orientation, duplicate geometry, and incorrect placement.
3. Set or verify units in Window → Model Info → Units. Measure a known feature before export.
4. Choose File → Export → 3D Model, select DWG, and choose the required DWG version if the recipient specifies one.
5. Open the exported file in the receiving CAD application and inspect it in wireframe and shaded visual styles.

AutoCAD does not generally treat a DAE file as a native CAD import format, so conversion through a compatible converter or 3D application is normally required before opening the model as DWG.

Check scale and compatibility

Verify units, orientation, and scale after conversion. A model authored in meters can appear 1,000 times too large or too small in a millimeter-based CAD drawing. Coordinate-system differences can also rotate the model or map its vertical axis differently.

Dense triangulated models can produce large DWG files and slow CAD display, selection, regeneration, and plotting. Remove hidden objects, duplicate meshes, unnecessary scene objects, and excessive mesh detail before conversion when the source application permits it.

Materials and texture coordinates may be simplified, omitted, or replaced with generic material assignments. DWG is suitable for geometry review and CAD placement, but not for preserving DAE animation or rendered-scene behavior.

If the target file is needed for manufacturing, precise engineering changes, or solid-model operations, obtain the original CAD source or a solid exchange format such as STEP from the model author. Converting a polygonal DAE mesh cannot reconstruct exact analytic surfaces, tolerances, or parametric design history.
