Free online SKB to DWG converter

AutoCAD and other CAD applications require DWG when SketchUp geometry must be edited, measured, coordinated, or delivered to a consultant. Because SKB is a SketchUp backup rather than an exchange format, it may need to be restored as an SKP model before export.

What the SKB format is

.skb is SketchUp's backup-file extension. When SketchUp saves an .skp model, it commonly keeps an earlier saved version as an SKB file in the same folder. The backup can therefore contain an older project state and may be the only usable copy after an accidental overwrite or damaged save.

SKB stores SketchUp model data, but it is not a general-purpose CAD exchange format. AutoCAD and other DWG applications do not normally open the backup extension directly.

What the DWG format is

.dwg is the native drawing format associated with AutoCAD and is supported by many architectural, engineering, surveying, and manufacturing CAD applications. It can store 2D and 3D CAD entities such as lines, arcs, polylines, faces, meshes, blocks, layers, dimensions, and annotations, depending on the exporting application.

DWG is appropriate when SketchUp geometry must enter a CAD drafting workflow, be referenced by another drawing, or be delivered in a format specified by a consultant. It does not preserve every SketchUp object or presentation feature as an equivalent DWG entity.

How to convert SKB to DWG

Use the built-in converter on 101convert.com if it accepts SKB files: upload the backup, choose DWG as the output format, start the conversion, and download the result. Open the downloaded file in a DWG-compatible CAD application and check its scale, geometry, layers, and annotations before using it for production work. Do not upload confidential project data unless the applicable privacy requirements permit external processing.

If the converter does not accept the backup extension, recover the file in SketchUp Desktop first:

1. Copy the .skb file to a separate location and keep the original unchanged.
2. Rename the copy, for example from building.skb to building.skp. This only changes the filename extension; it does not convert or repair the file. Enable filename extensions in the operating system if they are hidden.
3. Open the renamed copy in SketchUp. If it fails, try a SketchUp version close to the one that created the backup. A rejected file may be incomplete, corrupted, or not a valid SketchUp backup.
4. Save an opened backup as a normal SKP file using File → Save As. Check the recovered geometry, visible tags, scenes, section cuts, and model units.
5. For 3D output, use File → Export → 3D Model, choose DWG or DWG/DXF, open the export options, select a DWG version, and set the required units and geometry options.
6. For a plan, elevation, section, or other view-based drawing, set the camera, projection, visibility, and section cut. Use File → Export → 2D Graphic, select the available DWG/DXF option, and configure scale, units, linework, and section settings.
7. Open the result in AutoCAD, BricsCAD, DraftSight, or another DWG-compatible application. Measure a known dimension and inspect layers, coordinates, faces, linework, text, and section output.

DWG/DXF export is generally available in supported paid SketchUp Desktop editions such as SketchUp Pro. SketchUp Free and some web or trial configurations do not provide the same CAD export options; menu names and settings vary by SketchUp release.

Quality and compatibility limits

• An SKB may represent the previous saved state rather than the latest SKP. Compare both files before exporting, when the current SKP is available.
• Renaming SKB to SKP cannot fix damaged or incomplete data. If SketchUp cannot open the copy, recover the original SKP or another valid backup.
• SketchUp faces and curved forms are transferred as CAD faces, meshes, or segmented edges according to the export settings. Curves may become many straight edges, and the result is not usually parametric CAD geometry.
• Materials, textures, shadows, styles, scenes, animations, dynamic-component behavior, and other presentation or SketchUp-specific features do not map completely to DWG. Keep the recovered SKP when those features are still needed.
• Tags and SketchUp layers may be translated into DWG layers, but the mapping depends on the export settings and the receiving CAD application's interpretation. Check hidden geometry, unused entities, and layer visibility.
• Set the model units in Window → Model Info → Units and match them in the export dialog and receiving CAD application. A mismatch can produce a consistent scale error.
• Choose a DWG release supported by the recipient's software. If compatibility fails, export an older DWG version or open and resave the file in the recipient's CAD application.
